Sigh. The Yates case is a tragedy all around; trying to make hay out
of it for any particular religious or political position is ... tacky.
At the very least, it would be minimal decency to read up on it before
taking a stand -- DON'T SMIRK, GOODRICH, I MEAN YOU TOO.
My take:
-- The entire family was ill served by their pastor, their extended
family, their church, and their doctors.
-- The decision to keep having kids after repeated bouts of
post-partum depression shading into psychosis was certainly a bad one,
but it was made by both halves of the couple. How many guys (or humans
in general, but in this case the situation hit a guy) would make the
firm decision "when my wife agrees with me on this subject it's a
symptom of budding insanity?" Denial is a powerful human failing.
-- Mrs. Yates definitely had a psychotic break (see previously cited
article -- she's still psychotic, even under constant supervision on
heavy meds). So there's a near certainty that if she hadn't had a
religion to give her psychosis form, the psychosis would have just
taken some other form.
-- Texas does not let people get away with "not guilty by reason of
insanity" on the technicality that they actually _are_ wildly,
provably, barking mad bugf*ck insane. That would be soft on crime.
Can't have that.
