Well, I wasn't aware of that, until I found out the hard way.
I tried to convert Win98 and DOS "virtual machines", which are hard
drives with saved installations of OSs, from previous versions, with
DOS and Win98 on them, to be used by the new version of the host
program. The current version of VPC made a mess of them. The OSs would
run, but there were no useful virtual drivers, so networking and
sharing didn't work.
The day before yesterday, CH's former boyfriend (hereafter called "BF")
wanted to run some DOS games on his Mac, and and asked me for help. I
sent him Guest PC. I hadn't used it, so we installed it on our
computers at the same time, communicating with phone and IMs. It
installed and ran well, but oh boy is it STRANGE. It's simple and
inscrutable, and I'm not even talking about the DOS it has in it. Yet.
The OS it comes with is SOME kind of proprietary DOS that uses the same
commands, but those command files are all contained in ONE "director"
file. That's all there is, except for mouse and CD drivers in the
"drive". You are presented with a DOS "director" window in front, that
looks like a primitive file manager, who's menus have a lot of useful
commands. After I figured out how to bypass the director window, I was
able to execute the usual DOS commands, such as "ver", with gave info I
have never seen before, or even heard of. BF wasn't able to get that
far, and I didn't have time to try to explain it to him. He then tried
to install VPC7, that he had got from CD, who got it from me, but the
version he had didn't come with an OS, and we didn't know at the time
that it wouldn't do DOS. We haven't been in contact since.
I expect there to be a visit between us soon, because he wants all the
dragon pics I've been collecting for him, and software, and he wants me
to lobby his father into getting him a G5 for the holidays.
There is another PC emulation program for the Mac that's supposed to be
better than Guest PC, and it's open source and free, but I don't
remember the name, and can't find it. :-(
A poster who is using a "nym" account and remailers (no, not KH) has
sent me a whole bunch of stuff to go over, and from that I located and
downloaded some software that will automate some of those things. But
of course, those programs only "work" on the PC. When I do manage to
set up a system whereby I can usefully do what I'm looking to do, with
the least amount of PC software, including the emulation program, would
you like me to send you the data on it? I'm not sure it should be done
publicly.
I'm not going to get involved with manually configuring each message to
use nym and remailers on the Mac. It's SO complicated, with so much
careful typing, I KNOW I'll never get it right. Stupid dyslexia! :-)
Sometimes people seem to get so attached to some of their ideas that
they don't realize that some of them actually conflict with some of
their other attached to ideas. KH promotes the "don't get noticed"
first level of security, but seems to be somewhat opposed to the use of
Hushmail for it's "never leaving the server, so no one can know you are
communicating with", system, that seems to work well with the first
idea of security. And since it's less complicated than using "nym" and
remailers, less can go wrong with it on the USER end, and is therefore
more likely to be used, and used successfully. From what I saw, in your
"moderator" post, that I "encouraged" (ha!) you to make, You seemed to
somewhat agree with this. Sure, there are slightly more secure ways in
which to communicate, but we have to start somewhere.
By the way, KH is aware of this group. :-)
