POWDER MONKEY
Kevin Loeffler

The powder monkey carrying gunpowder
Cleaning the cannon
Having a uniform, but no weapon,
Mechanical tools, supplies.
Sad expression his identification
Intense fear at every conflict and confrontation.
Who tells his superiors "Yes sir."
Who tells frustrated sailors to move so he can fix the problem
His big eyes are cannonballs.
He can no longer look at conflict with any respect.
Servicing the cannon on the deck
He cannot hear as well from the constant fighting
is depressed
is a prisoner there on his own accord
is tired, working on the machinery
He can't turn around and go home.
Tying rope around the cannon on the vessel
Who regretfully calls for others to help
is tools, rope, and cannon
Who calls out when he is out of gunpowder
As  short as the weapon behind him
Asking what is needed of him.
What is needed of him?
