1431 - Joan of Arc, condemned as a heretic by an English-dominated
church court, was burned at the stake at Rouen. She was canonized by
Pope Benedict XV in 1920.
1498 - Christopher Columbus set sail with six ships from Sanlucar in
Spain on his third voyage of exploration to the Americas.
1527 - Germany's Marburg University was founded.
1536 - In England, King Henry VIII married his third wife, Jane
Seymour, 11 days after the execution of Anne Boleyn.
1783 - "The Pennsylvania Evening Post", first published by Benjamin
Towne in Philadelphia, was the first daily paper in the U.S.
1848 - William Young patented the ice cream freezer, and named it the
"Johnson Patent Ice Cream Freezer." It is believed that the freezer
was named after the actual inventor, Nancy Johnson, who had designed
the first hand-cranked ice cream freezer two years earlier but had
never patented her invention.
1848 - The Piedmontese under Charles Albert defeated the Austrians
under Radetsky at the battle of Goito in the Italian War of
Independence.
1848 - Under a treaty signed in February 1848 and ratified on this day
by Mexico, the United States received New Mexico and California as
well as parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona and Colorado in return for $15
million.
1868 - Memorial Day became an officially sanctioned holiday when
military commander John A. Logan chose May 30 to remember the soldiers
who had died during the Civil War. He called it "Decoration Day" after
the custom in several Confederate and Union states of decorating the
soldiers' graves with flowers. Over the years, the observance was
extended to commemorate all US soldiers killed in war.
1896 - The first auto accident occurred - in New York City. A Duryea
Motor Wagon, driven by Henry Wells from Springfield, Massachusetts
collided with a bicycle ridden by Evylyn Thomas of New York City.
1903 - The first American motorcycle hill climb was held - in
Riverdale, New York.
1911 - Ray Harroun won the first 500-mile auto race at what is still
referred to as the Brickyard, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Harroun
won the race with an average speed of 74.59 MPH. It took him six hours
and 42 minutes to complete the race. He won $14,000 for his effort.
1922 - The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C.
1933 - Sally Rand made a name for herself as she introduced her exotic
Exposition. Twisting and turning behind two huge fans, one might
wonder just how exciting the fan dance could possibly be. It is
important to realize that Ms. Rand was naked during the performance.
42 - 1,047 R.A.F. bombers set off to bomb Cologne in the R.A.F.'s
first 1,000-bomber raid of World War II.
1943 - The Aleutian islands of Kiska and Attu, off the coast of
Alaska, were retaken from Japanese forces by the U.S. Army.
1962 - The King of Swing, Benny Goodman, turned 53 and led the first
American jazz band to play in the Soviet Union. Goodman and his band
played six concerts in the Soviet Union.
1967 - Daredevil Evel Knievel jumped 16 automobiles in a row in a
motorcycle stunt at Ascot Speedway in Gardena, Ceorgia.
1971 - The spacecraft Mariner 9 was launched in the direction of Mars.
It became the first craft to orbit another planet, returning many
images of Mars. The images revealed what appear to be riverbeds on the
surface, suggesting the presence of water on Mars at some point in the
past. Mariner 9 photographed the entire surface of Mars.
1992 - The United Nations Security Council voted to impose sanctions
against Serb-led Yugoslavia in a bid to halt the fighting in Bosnia.
1994 - Pope John Paul II declared the debate on the ordination of
women over in a letter to Roman Catholic bishops.
1996 - In Britain, the marriage of Prince Andrew to the Duchess of
York, known to millions as Fergie, ended by decree in a London court.
