Largest Appendix Removed

The longest appendix measured 26 cm (10.24 in) when it was removed
from 72-year-old Safranco August (Croatia) during an autopsy at the
Ljudevit Jurak University Department of Pathology, Zagreb, Croatia, on
26 August 2006.

Ivana Pavic performed the autopsy and Alma Dubravic attended.

The appendix is a long, thin, worm-like pouch sticking out of the join
between the large and small intestines. Doctors are still not sure of
its purpose - or even if it has a purpose - and although it contains
immune-system cells, if it's surgically removed, health doesn't
suffer.
