311 - Galerius Valerius Maximianus issued an edict under which
Christians were legally recognized in the Roman Empire.
1006 - A supernova is believed to have been observed in Europe, China,
Japan, and Egypt. The explosion of Supernova 1006 occurred in the
constellation Lupus. Supernovae are exploding stars that may give off
a luminosity 100 million times that of the sun. A supernova may be
visible for several months or even years after its explosion.
1789 - George Washington was inaugurated as America's first president.
1803 - France agreed to sell Louisiana to America
1804 - Shrapnel, named after the British soldier Henry Shrapnel, was
used for the first time in warfare by the British against the Dutch in
Suriname.
1812 - Louisiana joined the United States as the 18th state.
1815 - The central provinces were designated as the Kingdom of Poland,
under Alexander of Russia.
1889 - The first national holiday in the United States was celebrated.

state lines in an obscenity case.
1980 - In London, armed gunmen seized the Iranian embassy demanding
the release of political prisoners in Iran; the siege lasted six days.
1989 - 500,000 people attended a papal mass in Madagascar where Pope
John Paul II beatified Victoire Rasoamanarivo, a 19th century
Madagascar woman.
1990 - American hostage Frank Reed was freed in Lebanon after nearly
four years in the hands of pro-Iranian kidnappers.
