Ruth Cleveland
Baby Ruth was the daughter of Grover Cleveland, the first child to be
born in the White House.
In the 1920s, a marginally successful confection called Kandy Kake
changed its name to Baby Ruth, in honor of the White House kid. It
soon became the best-selling candy in America.
Many people erroneously believe that the candy bar was named for
baseball great Babe Ruth. It was not. In fact, Ruth once tried to
market his own brand of candy, and the Curtiss Candy Company took him
to court. Babe Ruth was forbidden to use his own name on the candy to
avoid confusion with Baby Ruth.
