I once lived in a castle too, for several months. under unhappy
circumstances. My first "billet" as a wartime evacuee. Knole Castle,
Sevenoaks, Kent., now N.T.

I still remember with joy, watching the deer browsing 6 feet away
beyond the window where we were eating.

I was billeted with one of my sisters, later blown to pieces manning a
search-light battery, her first posting in the ATS!
