The ruins were discovered by American Hiram Bingham in 1911,
although locals had been living and farming on the terraces at the time.
The city was the residence of the Incan ruler Pachacuti
and built between 1460 and 1470 AD. It was not an important city by any
means
but the shear beauty of the ruins, high on a mountaintop in the middle of
Andean cloud forests and green mountains is incomparable.
And if you visit this area, be sure to bring an oxygen tank as
the altitude is rather high and the air is thin
