A Double-Page Spread in my Newspaper today.
"It may be hard to imagine now, but the auguries were far from good
when Les Miserables premiered at the Barbican Centre in London on 8
October 1985.
"The show was considered as pretentious, confusing & way too long by
many critics, with the negative voices far outnumbering those in
favour.......
"Cameron Mackintosh, the young theatre impresario, suffered a nervous
few weeks deciding whether to go ahead with a planned West End
transfer.........
"But 21 years later the show, affectionately known in theatrical
circles as "The Glums", he & the RSC can chuckle at the memory.
"For Les Miserables is about to become the longest running musical in
the world, beating the record previously held by another Cameron
Mackinstosh venture, Cats.
the show is now thought easily to have passed the 1bn Pounds mark.
There have been productions in 221 cities throughout the world in 38
different countries, Bill Clinton even used one of the songs, One Day
More, for his 1992 presidential campaign." LOL
