The Isle of Jura is a small island off the west coast of Scotland. Jura is
currently home to around 180 people and 6000 deer.
Jura's stunning scenery is dominated by The Paps of Jura - three conical
quartzite mountains - in the south of the island. To the north of the island
lies the notorious Corryvreckan Whirlpool.
At almost thirty miles long and seven miles wide, Jura is the third largest
of the islands of Argyll, yet the majority of the island is uninhabited. The
main village of Craighouse lies in the south east of the island in the
shelter of Small Isles Bay.
Today the prospect of peace and serenity far from the bustle of modern-day
life has appealed to many over the years. In fact it was this remoteness
which first attracted George Orwell to Jura where he wrote '1984' from
Barnhill in the north of the island.
