I went to school today. Middle school! My youngest son was doing a
public speaking presentation and parents were invited. I took my lunch
hour and went to see it. I had helped him rehearse his presentation
over the weekend, so I knew what it was about. But as in all things, I
was there to see him and support him. I was sitting in the auditorium
with his mother and other parents as the seventh graders filed in to
the auditorium. About 120 twelve and thirteen year olds. As they swept
by me I noticed something amazing. There was an overwhelming smell of
pheromones in the air. Did other adults notice? I was immediately
alert. The kids filled in all around us, in front of us and behind us.
There were girls too, but they smell distinctly different from boys. I
knew many of my son's classmates. Some of them sat in front of us and
turned around to greet us and talk to us. I noticed that my son sat
near the front away from us. That was because the presenters sat up
front near the podium. At his age he would have sat far away from me
anyway. LOL. The boys have that wonderful 'boy' smell we find so
irresistible. The younger ones, the 12s and the odd 11, were the ones
who most smelled like boy. They weren't wearing deodorant or body
spray yet. Some of them, who are further along into puberty, smelled
like deodorant or Axxe. One or two were certainly borrowing their
Dad's after shave or cologne.
The smell was distracting and it wasn't until the kids began with
their presentations that I was able to focus clearly. Most of the
girls sat near the front in their groups. The boys were near the back
surrounding me. With the lights low I was able to observe them without
appearing to stare. What a gift these boys are. Some of them are so
grown up. They're shaving and have deep voices and broad shoulders.
Others, like my son, are in between: the voice lower, but not yet
changed, a little peachfuzz on the upper lip and on the cheeks. And
then there are the late bloomers: Still very much little boys, short
in stature, with high voices and soft childlike features. They run the
gamut at 13. But everything about 13 is sex and their bodies are the
reason. I smelled the pheromones, it was intoxicating. It was clear
that they were affected by them too, though I doubt they knew how or
why. The boys were restless. They were polite, but restless. They
looked around a lot and were certainly tuned in to each other,
especially in between presentations. They would chew their fingernails
or cuticles, legs hopping in hyperctive rythym. Emotions swept over
their faces so quickly it was difficult to follow them. When they were
released from the presentation I was overcome by the pheromones again.
Sometimes I would get a whiff of individuals as they passed. I knew a
couple of those boys. It made my mind wander. Each of them is
discovering their sexuality in their own unique way, but as they exude
their developing sexuality I sense it too. A gift from each boy.
Once outside they raced off together in couples or small groups. They
were SO into each other. I understood that because I was so into them
too. My wife noticed too, but she experiences that every day, she
teaches sixth graders. (She has my dream job). But I know I'm the only
adult in that big room that experienced the moment as the kids had
done. Drunk on pubescent pheromones. It's not all the time that I feel
lucky to be a boy lover, but today I did.
