My dear Mr. Mover --
It was wholly by fortuitous accident that I encountered your greeting
in your note to my dear friend with the hair. Thank you very much. I
was surprised and delighted that you would think of me after all of
this time. I've been away quite a while; I've no idea how much of a
while.Real life has been richly and abundantly full.
It's tough to imagine that it's been more than ten years since we
first met. Much water has rolled over those rocks since then. At my
age, ten years don't amount to much; at yours, they mean a great deal.
Many important marks have passed.
I've been retired now for many years. Funny things happen with
retirement. You spend your student days preparing for useful work. You
spend your working days...working -- for many reasons, towards many
goals, many worthwhile, some ...well... nobody's perfect.
As you work, things come up. You say, "Some day I'm going to
<whatever!!>." Years roll on. The list grows. Retirement arrives.
"Some day" is here! In a lifetime the list grows mightily and the
list keeps right on growing. It's amazing.
When retirement arrives, you can do ANYTHING!! But!! You cannot do
everything. Choices abound, but choices must be made. Choosing can be
difficult. It's a high class problem but, indeed, real life keeps me
far busier now than ever before. Reconnecting with The Fort and
processing many thousands of new headers was a major and quite
fascinating effort.
There are few names I recognize, though there does seem to be a good
supply of old wine in new bottles. Who can tell? Old carping prattles
on. Baiters and baitees feed each other relentlessly as always. One
soul of many names has conjured his own history of The Fort, which
bears no resemblance to the history I watched. He must be smoking
really good stuff. Everybody is Y-Not these days, it seems.Maybe I am
too, why not? I've heard that Y-Not is dead. If so, then I'm
definitely not Y-Not. I'm definitely not dead.
I often wonder about you and KH and Dodgeboy who first made me welcome
in The Fort. If you see either or both, please pass along my fondest
regards. You all have my real life email should you be inclined to
use it. Such things take time, I know, and I also know how scarce time
is for folks at your stage of life.
It was a delight to hear from you, however obliquely.
May the new year that's hurrying towards us be your very best ever.
PLH to all.
