You've left school at 15 and you love the sea. Tough boys join the Senior Service and become men at Ganges. Softer boys join the mercantile marine as cabin boys.
This snip is from the much loved Queen Mary. The boys are being inspected for clean fingernails. Perhaps the officer also had to inspect the naughty parts for correct washing and wiping but this being 1947 they didn't show it on the newsreel.
