Hey NP-d06,
You've asked some good questions. I will try to answer them here. Some
additional material is available in The Fort FAQ, which I posted on
9/11 and is still on the servers.
As far as newsreaders go, there are many available with varying
degrees of difficulty of use and feautures. I have been using Agent
since 2002. It is an intuitive and easy to use and does a lot of
things for you automatically (like decoding yEnc attachments), you can
also use it for e-mail. There is a free version available at
Forte.com. Others swear by X-News, it's free at download.com. In my
mind it's convoluted, but to each his own. PowerPost is awesome for
posting binaries in large amounts. It is freeware too, check out
binaries4all.com.
The PING function only works if whoever you are attempting to reach is
paying attention. Most folks you would desire to correspond with in
these groups will respond to a PING.
As far as communication with other BLs goes, the way you are
communicating with me now is safest. I have no access to your IP
address this way. Once you have gotten to know someone enough to trust
them you could risk e-mailing. There is a lot of well deserved
paranoia in the groups. Some will not respond to an e-mail. Most do
not post a valid e-mail address in their headers, mine is altered when
I post it, but easy to figure out. I may respond if you e-mail me, but
I will normally always respond if you PING me with a post. See the
Fort FAQ for more information about revealing personal information,
etc.
As far as determining who is who it is almost impossible to tell for
certain. If you learn how to read headers you can tell a lot. Someone
earlier today forged NP Cultist Babysitter's nick in a funny post. NP
Cultist Babysitter (who has MANY different nicks in order to seem like
multiple people) is convinced that I did the forgery. I didn't do it.
And a look at my headers compared to the forger's headers will show
you it probably wasn't me. NP Cultist Babysitter does not know how to
read headers, so he jumped to a conclusion. The forger used a newer
version of Agent than I use. The forger uses Astraweb like I do, but
sent the message through a number of European servers, probably using
a remailer, but maybe because he or she is a resident of a European
country. I know who replied to that post though, because I know his
headers and recognize his English usage.
One trick to knowing you're talking to the correct person is getting
to know the personalities. I'm fairly consistently Doc. Doc will react
the same way most of the time. I tend toward being friendly and
helpful, I can also be touchy sometimes as you have seen. Ronin is a
personality who is very inscrutible, he is also very 'zen' and tends
to say things that make you think. Insane for Boys is pretty much as
advertised. He enjoys posting and looking at posts of handsome boys.
It would be easy to say some things about other posters who get on my
last nerve, but I will let you decide who's a looney and who isn't.
Good luck with your research, I look forward to your future posts to
see how you apply what you have learned. I am here if you have other
questions. Congratulations on your new NP Badge and you're welcome!
Then again, if anyone wants a Fort Badge, all they have to do is ask
me.
Stay Safe,
Doc
