Like many of you, I've really been enjoying the coverage of the Little
League World Series. At some point I began to wonder why ESPN would
allocate so much money and so many resources to cover the tournament.
As I watched and listened to the commentary, it struck me: Boys Sell.
Why else would a major network devote two weeks of coverage on two
channels? To hear the Orel Hersheiser go on and on about how
attractive some of the boys are is eye opening. At one point he
created an uncomfortable dead air silence by speaking the truth, 'What
a good looking kid he is'. The play by play guy didn't know what to
say and was caught off guard. Normally, the play by play guy would
agree with the color analyst and go on about the pitch count or
whatever, but I could 'feel' the announcer thinking, 'Do I really want
to agree with Orel that this boy is incredibly good looking? Is that a
good career move?' It was a mind blowing experience. I was thinking
the same thing Orel Hershheiser was thinking! Almost all of the boys
are compellingly beautiful. You can see every nuance of the peach fuzz
on their lips and cheeks in eye popping HD.
It's true, the beauty and pubescent sexuality of those boys SELLS.
Kelloggs was first in line as a major sponsor, Subway created
special commercials and a major promotion to coincide with the
coverage. When my son and I were in the cereal aisle this weekend
after watching some of the games, what do you think he picked?

The slick ESPN promos are both intense and emotional, but
alongside the action is the boy beauty. The excellent coverage
features long, lingering extreme closeups, especially on the batter
and pitcher, who all seem to be really good looking boys. ESPN is not
afraid to show the tears and pluck at your heartstrings either.
Have you noticed how they manage to get a shirtless boy in the
background of almost every crowd cutaway? There have been countless
crotch adjustments. Close ups of boys spitting, and EXUBERANCE!
What I love the most is that every nuance of boy emotions are shown
in every game. The best part is the pre-teen machismo; fist
pumping, high fiving and chanting the boys show the cameras. Boys
sell and ESPN has figured out how to parlay the sex appeal of boys
into a mini goldmine. The LLWS is baseball at it's best and purest
form and the event brings out the best in boys from all over the
world.
BTW, the kid who pitched for Mexico tonight (Marcelo Martinez) was
strikingly handsome. He was also filling out his jock strap to the
extreme. OMG.
The funny thing is, I don't care who wins. I love them all!
