Maybe to avoid threats, harassment and even violence against him and his
family? Case in point:
Mob attack after paedophile claim
By Jessica Forster
Sunderland Echo, UK: 11 August 2009
http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/Mob-attack-after-paedophile-claim.5541982.jp
A mob of about 200 people smashed up a home after wrongly believing
a paedophile was living there.
They chanted "paedo" and threw bricks at the Wearside house.
Steven Cromby, and his pregnant partner Donna, had to be escorted
away by police.
Every window in the house at Stridingedge, Blackfell, was smashed
in the attack.
Cameras were knocked off the wall and the garden fence booted
down.
Northumbria Police confirmed Mr Cromby was not a paedophile.
Police made five arrests after the disturbance on Sunday, which
was followed by looting yesterday.
A 39 year-old man and a 19-year-old man were arrested and
cautioned for disorder.
A 17-year-old was bailed pending further enquiries.
Two other men, aged 31 and 34, were arrested for affray, but no
further action was taken.
The trouble began when rumours that Mr Cromby was a paedophile
began circulating around the estate.
Neighbour Debra Marshall, 28, said: "Someone said they were on
the same wing as him in prison and said he was a 'nonce'.
"He had cameras outside his house and they were pointed right
where people's kids were playing.
"There were hundreds of people around here on Sunday trying to
get him out of the house.
"If they had got him out they would've killed him."
Residents of Stridingedge said there were 11 police cars, the
police helicopter and the force dog team at the scene.
Officers escorted the couple from the house on Sunday night and
took them to a safe location.
They returned yesterday, accompanied by officers, to collect
clothes and personal belongings.
Their reappearance sparked more trouble. Ladders were used to get
into the house and damage was done as it was looted.
A police spokesman said: "At about 1.30pm on Sunday, we received
a report of disorder outside an address in Stridingedge,
Washington.
"Police attended the scene and found that a dispute between two
families was ongoing in the street. Those involved were dispersed
by officers.
"At about 9.20pm police received a further report of disorder in
the street. Officers attended the scene and arrested five men."
This couple was lucky that they escaped with their lives, if not their
property--others have not been so lucky. All that took place was based on
the unsupported word of /one/ man. Once the mob begins baying for blood,
there's no reasoning with them:
There were hundreds of people around here on Sunday trying to
get him out of the house.
"If they had got him out they would've killed him."
If he had been killed, the fact that he was later shown to be innocent
would have provided scant comfort to his wife. The irony would be that the
people who murdered him would get a proper trial, whereas he didn't.
