Thanks for the remembrances of our MTB. This time of year is always
hard on me. Isn't it amazing how someone who was in our lives for the
blink of an eye can have such a profound affect on us? Ronin, you may
not know this, but at age 11 MTB learned to drive his brother's 'ute'
by standing up behind the wheel. Even at age 15 he was barely over
five feet tall (though he was in the middle of his growth spurt) when
he drove from Charters Towers to Mount Ida for his brother's wedding.
He didn't have a drivers license, but was an accomplished bush driver
nonetheless. He described the perils of the road trains and how one
could communicate by radio with the driver of the road train in front
of you to see if it was okay to pass. One couldn't see oncoming
traffic because of the dustcloud whipped up by the 3 x semis. It took
a long time to pass them and it was a scary feeling flying blindly
through that dust. He described a place where there was an endless red
desert and it was a as flat as a pancake for as far as you could see
in any direction. He said that there was blue sky above and red below
and the endless horizon could make you dizzy.
He gave us a window into another world, his world. And he made us all
feel a part of it. What an incredible gift he gave us without knowing
it.
