I don't actually know why. Yes sticks can be fun, but not against all
that protective equipment. Where is the real excitement in blind-siding
someone in a hockey game, especially when your penalty causes your teem
to loose the game?
In Karate, we also used sticks, from six inches long, to eight feet
long, with a two foot blade at the end of it. Padding and other
protection wasn't used much in those days. Nor did we, officially, do
full contact. Many of us were curious about just how really effective
these weapons, and the techniques to use them, were. And the weaponless
techniques, too.
There were some organized, but secret competitions, in the far east,
where I spent much time, that had virtually no rules, and the last man
standing was the winner. Some died. I never managed to get all the way
though to the finals, in any of the competitions. We did discover,
through many bruises and broken bones, just how good we were, which was
actually better than we had expected.
I was never so afraid, nervous, excited, and ALIVE, as I was during
those battles. There is *nothing* like facing your opponent with *no*
protection, except your own knowledge and skill, and no rules to
interfere with the outcome. To survive possible death, and win over
your opponent with only your own natural weapons, is the greatest high,
with the greatest satisfaction, that one can possibly achieve. Well, In
my opinion, anyway. There was no shame in loosing. Just being invited,
was a great honor.
I am way to old and infirm to to that any more. I don't even teach it
now.

I have a question. I don't mean to embarrass you, not this time,
anyway, but do you have a reason for calling a group a "froup"? Is it
intentional? If so, could you tell me why?
