I'm not that old either! LOL I guess that puts us in the minority here.
I would put the average age of posters here at 50. We have a long time
before we get there! (psst I think they are a little jealous of us LOL)
Giganews is great for long retention but you pay for it. There are two
problems with it for us here. Giga blocks binaries in non binary
groups. You can't see them and can't post them but strangely you can in
*this* group. Nobody knows how long that will last. Giga likes to
cancel accounts and inform authorities when they notice (receive
complaints) people posting copyrighted material in the warez groups. I
don't know how that would play out with porn but I wouldn't risk it. If
you frequent the Mac groups you can ask Wade about giga. He is very
outspoken. LOL (I see you post from a Mac. I use both platforms.)
Servers are okay to download from (they don't log it) but some are more
dangerous than others to post illegal stuff through but we can't know
all the time which ones until its too late. If all you want is to
download files and not post them you could choose any server you want
and probably be equally safe or unsafe depending on your real life
situation.
Some server info from people here using them:
Easynews recently stopped carrying some of our groups including this
one. Not for us.
Newscene doesn't have long retention and isn't the cheapest for what
you get but it's reliable and I have not had any problems and neither
have most posters here who use it.
Astraweb is has long retention and cheap block prices but is absolutely
*not* for posting files if you want to stay out of jail.
Newshosting doesn't look too bad but I don't know much about it.
http://privacy.li/ano_news_subscription.htm is a newshosting reseller I
looked at but never tried. They are supposed to be very secure but
looks expensive.
Usenetmonster has the lowest monthly rate I know of but not for much
gigs download but they have rollover. I never used it so I don't know
how secure they are and the only poster here who uses it hasn't said.
Newsfeeds is unreliable and expensive and doesn't like binaries in non
binary groups.
Teranews always has problems. Even their "free" 50MB a month server
isn't worth the trouble.
Altopia is a server some trolls use. Must be abuse tolerant but I don't
know anything else about it.
