And I think it's great that you can remember Miss Rosa, but, tell me,
how many of the ones who came before her do you remember? Can you name
any of those who were simply beaten down or hanged or otherwise taken
care of?
And I would never mean to denigrate what she did -- but was she
fighting against bigotry or was she just tired and frustrated and
decided that she wasn't giving up her seat to a white person? Either
way, what she did was brave, and she deserves every bit of recognition
for heroism. But she was also pretty damn lucky.
Is it scary? Hell, yes! I recall reading about a case where a man who
molested his daughter was placed on a sexual offenders list -- one
that listed his last known address as the one where his former family
still resides, though he's now elsewhere. So, do you think it's good
that the bigots throw rocks, and make nasty phone calls and do all
other sorts of misdeeds to the place where this poor unfortunate
little girl has already suffered enough?
And what of my family and friends? Should I open them up to bigotry
and ridicule and danger just because they happen to be related to me
or happen to know me?
So, I do what I can. It may not be much, but it's all I can do. And
it's not near as safe as you'd like to make it out to be.
