Um, I still do, sometimes! But I remember those times -- why did I
think that it made sense to read under the covers with a flashlight?

Exactly my point. Neglect your child and he/she will seek adult
attention and affection where he/she can get it. No one is willing to
take responsibility in this age of "I'm suing them because I was too
dumb not to know that you can't take the top off of a cup of coffee,
put it between your legs and drive away without getting scalded."
People can't protect their children from everything -- but they damn
well ought to try to live up to the responsibilities they signed on
for when they created him or her!
