Stephen's Secure Blog #342
These stories about Stephen began was when he was 10 years old, and
moving to a new part of the country to attend a special school for
gifted students, in the 1950's. This was from a time before computers
would fit on a desk, and when people communicated with friends in other
countries by actual letters sent through the postal service. He wrote
225 of them to a friend. He stopped writing to his penpal, but found he
still wanted to record his life, in case he lost his memory again, and
wrote 30 entries in his first logbook. Then he wrote to an artificial
intelligence called Geenee, in the master computer in his school for
gifted students, which he started attending in 2016. Now it's after
2018, and he's continuing to save his memories in a secure blog.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
The stories may not be posted in chronological order.
Stephen is 17 in this story, in the Winter of year 8 of his special
school.
Stephen's Secure Blog #342 "The Innocence Project"

Pete said "The fallout about the Pope and the BDs is as expected. All
speculation and no substance." Chad grinned, and said, "And a lot of
frustration from everybody that neither you or he are commenting on
it." I said "Good." Rose said "Is that what you were going for?" I said
"Not exactly. It was a can't lose thing, with anything that happened.
What was my primary reason for doing it?" She said "To modernize the
Church?" I said "Nope. To make the Dalai Lama happy. I did all the
work, and I'm still doing it, for Tibet's freedom. I wanted to give him
something to do that he would really want to, and so he could please me
at the same time. Confounding the Pope was just a side issue." Hawk
said "I bet he sure didn't think that way!" He laughed.
Chad said "The Innocence Project wants to talk to you." I had a
mysterious smile, and said, "Should I?" Hawk started laughing again,
despite Rose poking him. Pete was trying to hide a grin. Chad was very
interested, and trying to hide it, while he said cautiously, "It
couldn't hurt to meet with them." I said "Want to bet on that?" He said
"What are you going to do with them?" I said "Hobson's choice, doubled.
Maybe." He said, while Hawk was laughing again, "Oh. Interesting. I'll
set it up."
At the meeting with The Innocence Project, I said, "Well, I'm here.
How can I help you?" After some hesitation, one said, "We were hoping
you could tell us what you could do to help." I said "What I would or
could do, wouldn't be accepted in court." Another one said, "Yet, you
are here." I said brightly, "I noticed that!" One laughed. One said
"WILL you help in some way?" I said "I could, if we could agree on the
terms. But first, we have a disagreement on goals. You want to free the
wrongly convicted. Some of those people have committed other crimes
which, if they had been found properly guilty, would have kept them
where they now are. I WILL NOT FREE THEM. Those who have committed no
serious crimes, have my support." He said "That presents a problem." I
said "It sure does! Do you want to be responsible for more murders
committed by a newly free un-convicted murderer?" He said "No, but how
will we know about that? Oh. You would know." I said "There is more.
You know that some rightly convicted people use you as a delaying
tactic, or just to be manipulative, tying up your resources that can be
better used elsewhere." One said "They do. I see a connection. If we
knew the truth, we wouldn't have those problems."
I said "I have the ability to know when I'm being lied to, but I
don't have the time to interview all your er, victims. However, I can
arrange it that YOU could have that ability." That really captured
their interest. She said "How would you do that?" I said "I could give
you an instrument which would signal that a lie was spoken in its
range. It is accurate to the definition that it is set to. That will
be, if the person talking believes that what he is saying is not true.
So, it won't work on an insane person who truly believes he is
Napoleon, no matter how short he is." There were some mixed reactions.
She said "Would that signal be heard or visible to others?" I said
"Yes. And the client must be told about it, and given the opportunity
to avoid self incrimination. There is another issue. Things must
balance. I can't give this kind of thing, without taking away
something. The instrument will be in the form of a ring which can't be
removed without causing it to never work again." I could hear Hawk in
my mind laughing his head almost off, while the project people worked
through the implications.
She said "Why?" I said "That's to keep other unauthorized people from
trying to take them from you, and unsuccessfully learning how they
work." She said "Ah! I see. But this means the person with the ring
can't lie without discovery." I said "Right. I can't lie, so I have
little sympathy for people who would have a problem with that. Don't
give any to a politician, or we will be inundated with er, signals."
They laughed. One looked around, and said, "Or lawyers. We often say
things we don't believe, as part of our job. We can't say in a trial
that our client is guilty. We have to say he is innocent, to let the
adversarial system work." I said "That IS a problem." One said
"Interns, then. Could cause problems in social settings." I said "I
haven't had any. Well, except for causing some very interesting
expressions." They laughed. I said "And laughter." They laughed again.
I said "There is something else I can do, for those who pass the
truth test, and ONLY those. I can give you their DNA profiles, with
their permission. They won't be acceptable in court, but could be used
to get a certified forensics lab motivated to do the test for real, if
you tell them who gave it to you." There were some VERY interesting
expressions, which I examined with interest. One caught me at that and
laughed, and then had to explain why. One said "How many rings can we
have?" I said "There is an issue in that. Not a never ending supply. I
do NOT want to encourage deliberate limited use. A person who takes off
a ring in less than a year, will not be able to use another. If they
try, the ring will deactivate itself." One said "What if they have to
try more than one on, to find one that fits?" I said "That's what these
ring gauges are for." One said "We aren't going to outthink him." I
said "Maybe, but the effort is beneficial. Well, I AM a teacher." Some
nodded. I said "I should mention that you won't have any more help from
me in about 14 to 16 years." I raised my hand to interrupt, and said,
"You will know why, then. Here is a sample which can be removed without
deactivation. Who wants to test it?" I gave it to the one who responded
first. I said "Now somebody has to lie. I can't, so it has to be
somebody else here." Silence. I said with a grin, "Interesting." One
said "2 + 2 = 9." The ring blazed red, in a 4cm diameter globe around
it. I said "Even if you wrap foil around the hand with the ring, that
light will still look just like that. Nothing material will stop it."
He said "It's a small ring." I said "Intentionally. Silver, too. All
so the guards in the prison won't think to take it away from you. We
hope. It works through glass and plastic, to a little less than three
meters, depending on conditions. Be aware that it doesn't know who your
target is. So watch for response times. You don't want the guy in the
next cell making your client look guilty when he isn't. Here is a box
of a hundred, in assorted marked sizes. Do I have to warn you that if
the wrong people discover the rings, even in use, your lives could be
in danger?" One said "To be expected. What if we have trouble with the
government wanting to take or examine them?" I said "Let me know, and
I'll have their bosses yell at them. Yes, I am known to them. In a good
or bad way? Yes." They laughed. I said "Anything more?" The boss said
"Yes, much more, but just wishes. Thank you very much for this er,
interesting help. We need to do a lot of thinking about it." I said
"Absolutely!" He said "You intended that." I said "Always!" He said
"Frustrating." I said "Yeah, always." They laughed. I said "When you
take off that ring, it will be like the others in restrictions. You
know how to reach me for DNA profiles for those the rings clear of all
major crimes." I stood, and so did they, and I hugged them all with
love. I ported home.
Hawk was still laughing. Rose had given up poking him. She said to
me, "Interesting experiment." I said "Yes. In a lot of ways, the
situation is full of tests." Hawk said "You know they are going to ask
you for more help, when they can't prove a person innocent who really
is." I said "Yes." Chad ported in, and said, "What will you do?" I said
"Depends on the case. And how far I want to go public." He said
"Interesting. I suspect you will go more public as time goes, which you
wouldn't if you expected to live a long time." I said "Yes. I can use
that to take me out of their reach, and leave them having to think
really hard." Hawk said "I think hard all the time." I said "As any
ring toss enthusiast would love." Chad almost laughed his head off.
Even Rose had to laugh. Then we got physical, and made each other
finish very well.
I said "The more open I can get in a relatively good way, and then go
beyond their reach, the better it will be for the rest of you, who
might need to do something probably less outrageous in the open after
me." Rose said "Yes, I saw that. Even you wouldn't do that just for
