Pedophile will stay jailed
The serial pedophile William Thomas Clare will remain in prison until
at least 2033 after being sentenced for the rape and manslaughter of a
three-year-old boy, known only as J.
Clare, who applied electrical wires to the unconscious boy's chest
before calling an ambulance, is already in prison for raping the boy's
six-year-old sister, known as B.
He was babysitting the children for their mother.
Clare, 34, has convictions for three more sets of sexual crimes dating
back to 1990.
He faces another three charges of rape and four of indecent assault on
a 12-year-old girl in July 2000. The court heard psychiatric evidence
there was "a significant risk" Clare, a confessed pedophile, would
offend again when released.
Justice Michael Grove in the Supreme Court said while there could be no
preventive detention, he had considered the need to protect the
community when sentencing Clare to the maximum of 25 years for J's
manslaughter.
Clare will be eligible for parole in July 2033, but could remain behind
bars on these offences until 2039 if he is denied parole.
