Stephen's Secure Blog #73
These stories about Stephen began was when he was 10 years old, and
moving to a new part of the country to attend a special school for
gifted students, in the 1950's. This was from a time before computers
would fit on a desk, and when people communicated with friends in other
countries by actual letters sent through the postal service. He wrote
225 of them to a friend. He stopped writing to his penpal, but found he
still wanted to record his life, in case he lost his memory again, and
wrote 30 entries in his first logbook. Then he wrote to an artificial
intelligence called Geenee, in the master computer in his school for
gifted students, which he started attending in 2016. Now it's 2018 and
later, and he's continuing to save his memories in a secure blog.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
The stories may not be posted in chronological order.
Stephen is 13 in this story, in the Fall, after the start of year 4 of
his special school.

I had a meeting with Pete, and gave him the memory of my last mission
to Zander's world. He said "Rose rose to 220!" I said with a grin, "By
any other name, she did. No thorns, though." He said "Did you know that
would happen?" I said "I would like to say I did, but I just suspected
it would increase, because of what happened to her IQ when her psionic
abilities were shocked open. I didn't expect that much! I'm very happy
for her, and me. She's welcome to do my thinking for me anytime!" He
laughed. He said "We are in negotiations to purchase a fertility
clinic. Chad has agreed to supervise that. He said your idea was good,
for a sperm of the moment thing." I made a rude noise, and we laughed.
I said "How is the Centaur situation going?" He said "Since you put
Ichi in charge, very well. We turned back two other ships which were
going to invade other inhabited systems, the same way as the first one.
Someday they will get the message. He has an idea to speed that up,
which he plans to tell you about when he's ready." I said "You just
told me that to frustrate me, didn't you." He grinned and said, "Not
other, and then hugged.
In bed with Ichi, I said, "You can make babies happen. You should.
We're going to own a fertility clinic. We want our boys to donate, so
we can make more of us." He said "But I thought Adept genes were
recessive." I said "Not after a few months of sleeping on the stoned
beds. I made a deal with them. We get that, with a little improvement
in health, psionic abilities, and lifespan, and they get to experience
life and sex through us. Not a bad arrangement, I think." He said
"Almost a wow." We laughed. I said "You said you are second to me.
Who's third?" He said "Private information. I don't know." I said "As
my second, you should know. Rose is 220 now." He said "Wow!" I said "I
agree. And she's approaching you in situation manager skill, at least
before and after the action. I didn't know her ability during it, yet."
He said "That's great! I can use help with the Centaurs." I said "She
still needs more academics, and strength in her psionics. End if this
term, minimum. Then I want you to work her. She has exceptional emotion
sensing talent, and better telepathy than everybody but me. She needs
to practice those talents in real life situations, to be her best.
Right now, her primary work assignment is helping Zander in teaching,
when an extra Adept is needed. We can use somebody else after that.
Back to your sex life. You need a wife. Are you looking?" He said
"Can't a man have any privacy around here?" I said "So speaks a naked
man in my bed who is playing with my nuts." He laughed, and said, "You
have a point there." I said "Yes, and it's your fault." We decided to
take care of that with some healthy mutual squirting.
Hoechess called and asked for a private meeting. I went, bringing a
gift. I was tossing it from hand to hand when I walked into her office.
She just HAD to follow it with her eyes. But she did notice my grin at
that, and couldn't help laughing. I put it on her desk. She stared at
it, and reached to pick it up, but halted in mid air. I said "Go ahead.
It's for you." She turned it over and over, staring at it in
fascination. She said "It smells wonderful. What is it made of?" I said
"Rare natural pink and white perfume jade." It was a carved and pierced
ball of young Tsuriss children, wrestling and playing with each other
in great fun, 7cm in diameter. I said "You can use this stand for it,
if you want to. The ball is made to have hands play with it. There is a
little bit of love in it, which should have a calming affect when you
hold it." She said "It does, and it's exquisite! You are much more than
an ordinary artist!" I grinned and said, "I agree. I'm nice, too." She
laughed. She said "Deflection. You are embarrassed by compliments." I
bowed in agreement. We sat.
I waited for her to say something. Finally, she laughed. "The
Situation Manager at work. I have reviewed what you said, and what I
know of your actions. I must admit I dismissed the situation manager
ability as inconsequential. I was wrong. Very much wrong." I smiled and
nodded. She said "And find it very frustrating to be managed
successfully, even when I know it's happening." I said "We all want to
manage our situations. It should come as no surprise that some are
better at it than others, and that study and practice can improve
that." She said "A very good non answer." I said "To a non question."
She laughed and said, "Are you that more intelligent than I?" I said
"Do you really want the truth of that, to the limit of your
understanding?" She said "I understand, and withdraw my question. I
asked for this meeting to tell you I will personally support your kind
of school on my planet, and help acquire students for it. You said you
would arrange for the teaching of one student, who will teach the
others. How will you select such a student?" I said "I have already
selected several candidates. All that remains is the personal
interview." She said "So you have visited my home world?" I said "Not
in body, no." She sat up a little straighter and said, "In mind?" I
said "It's not that simple. We have different ways to do most of what
we do, which we choose according to our particular abilities and
convenience. I need to ask the candidate if she wants to learn how to
use her abilities, and convince her that it's possible. This first
student needs to have the right kind of character, because she will be
a young adult, and so that won't change. Somebody who has overcome
hardship with great effort." She said "Why is that a requirement?"
I said "The education and training is very hard work. In groups,
motivation for maximum effort can come from competition and peer
pressure. A single student won't have that, so self reliance and
dedication are necessary, away from parental control. We have
experience in this." She said "I accept that. How soon can you do the
interview?" I said "How soon can you arrange papers for me?" She said
"That is unnecessary for citizens of this world, and for aliens who
have been adopted by us. You are twice welcome." I said "Do your people
have free entry to this world?" He said "Yes." I said "I can go there
and do the interview at any time." She said "May I go with you, and be
present during the interview?" I said "There are two parts to address
separately, in that question. No, you may not be present in the
interview. The first interviewee might not want to be our student, or
might otherwise fail the interview. Or all of them might not be
selected. If one is selected, she will be telling private things to me,
which should be their choice who should know about. I will be acting as
their therapist, and so that must remain confidential." She said "I
understand. I may talk with the selected one in private after that,
before she comes to the school here?" I said "Of course." She said "I
didn't expect that." I said with a grin, "I know." I could feel her
consternation. I said "I would not restrict the free will of anybody,
not even a student, without just cause. I am disappointed that you
could think I would. Please remember, I am me. I won't act in
accordance to what you would expect of somebody like er, you." She said
"I accept the rebuke. It was well deserved. I apologize." I bowed and
said "Accepted."
I said "Now about travel. We have our own ways of doing that, which
are faster and more efficient than the ways you are familiar with. I
have too many duties and commitments to waste the time traveling your
way, in doing nothing." She said "You said you understand the
technology of the Van. Should I assume that you have matter
transmitters?" I said "Our technology was invented before we saw
anything of the Van's. We do not use their matter transmitters, and
couldn't if we wanted to. I'll tell you why, if you promise to keep it
a secret." She struggled with that for a while, and then promised. I
said "Their transmitters are not tunable. They are made in matched
pairs. They keep one of the set on their home planet, in central
stations, and the matching one in the destination such as a ship or
station. The GC could never make the ones they had work, because they
only had one of a pair, and never had a matched set." She said "Oh!" I
nodded. She said "But you can make them yourselves?" I said "Yes, if we
wanted to, but better." She said "Wow!" I said "I've heard that
before." She laughed and said, "How did you learn about the Van
technology?" I said "I can tell you that, but not without a lot of
other things first, which will severely distract us from the primary
subject at hand. We will save that for another time." She said "I
understand. There still remains the issue of transportation."
I said "Yes. Going your way, for me, is unacceptable. You could go
without me, and we could meet there. The other option is you and I
could travel on one of our ships. If that happened, you would have to
keep your trip and visit to your planet a secret." She said "Why a
secret?" I said "You are a public figure. Your travel and whereabouts
are monitored, and not always by people who are friendly to you, even
among your own people, which what happened in our last meeting
demonstrated. If you are seen on your world in a way which is
You are correct. If I go with you, I must not be seen." I said "There
is another issue. Our ships are not yet registered on any world, and we
are reluctant to show what they can do, that others can't. Nobody has
seen our ships closer to an inhabited planet, than the astroid belt.
Yes, we can travel and land undetected by GC science, but there is
always a risk. If you come with us, we will have to be more careful
than you might be accustomed to. And unfortunately for you, VERY
uneventful. We made our ships for us, and not for people who don't have
our ability to interact mentally with the ship's systems. There are no
windows, for example." She said "I can live without them." I said
"Should I take that to mean you want to travel with us?" She grinned
and said, "Yes, and you knew I would." I said "Yes. Let me know when
you have about 6 days available, no earlier than 4 days from now." She
said in surprise, "THAT fast?" I said "Well, we don't know how long it
will take to set the interviews up, and how long they will take." She
said "Oh! Should I take that to mean the ship can transmit itself?" I
grinned and said, "Very good! Yes. It does other things as well. Rose
will be with us to help you with the ship's systems. Would you like to
see a picture of our ship?" She said "Yes, please." I said "This is a
projection in 3D." I turned and projected the big main ship into the
air, and turned it around so she could see the shuttles. I told her
what size it was, and said we would be using one of the shuttles.
She said, "You almost made me forget to ask this question. How did
you select, or even locate the candidates on my world, without being
there?" I said "I did not intend to leave without telling you something
about that, which is why I offered to show you the ship now." She
laughed really hard, and said, almost yelling, "Situation Manager!" I
bowed in acknowledgement. I said "Ready?" She nodded. I said "The
active picture I showed you, is live and in real time, not stored." She
said "Wow!" I had covered my ears, and she laughed.
I said "I think we have concluded what we should, today. Before I go,
may I handle the jade once more?" She gave it to me, and I ran my
fingers all over it. Then I sighed, and put it back on her desk. At her
expression, I said, "Commissions are sometimes different, but when I
make what calls to me to be made, it is always part of me, and my love.
When I discovered the stone I made this from, I knew what it would be,
and who it would be for. When I said our ships can do other things, I
expected to show you something connected to that now, which must remain
a secret, like all our other secrets." I bowed and gave her my love,
and said, "Farewell." I ported to my house, from right in front of her.
In my viewpoint I left behind, I could see her mouth drop open in
astonished surprise. I grinned, naturally. She stood up, and then could
see a piece of paper I had left on the chair where I had been sitting.
All it had on it was a big grinning mouth, which made her burst out
laughing really hard, which made me laugh with her.
