Stephen's Logbook #1 Entry #11
These stories about Stephen began was when he was 10 years old, and
moving to a new part of the country to attend a special school for
gifted students. This was from a time before computers would fit on a
desk, and when people communicated with friends in other countries by
actual letters sent through the postal service. He wrote 225 of them to
a friend. Please refer to them for insight into this new series of
stories. He stopped writing to his penpal, but found he still wanted to
record his life, in case he loses his memory again. So, we can now look
into selected entries in his logbook to see how he is doing.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
The stories may not be posted in chronological order.
Stephen is 15 in this story, before the Winter break of year 6 of
special school.
Stephen's Logbook #1 Entry #11 "After Bad Company"
NEW ENTRY
We took our new limousine back to the school. We hugged each other,
and didn't say anything the whole trip. We felt a lot of unpleasant
emotions about what we had just been involved in, such as anger,
disgust, and sadness. We went in, and to our private room. The rest of
the team were there. They hugged and kissed us. I still had a few tears
flowing, when I said, "Nigel. Tell us how we did, and if you think we
could have done anything better." He started saying bad things about
the CEO. I broke in and said, "Nigel! Please. Don't make it worse. The
critique." He said "Right. Sorry. You were very careful. The tape
doesn't incriminate us. Just them. He was cagy enough to make that a
tough bit of work, but you finally got him to commit. They still don't
know we are adepts, but know enough of our abilities to respect and
fear us, and our sneaky suspicious devious devilish leader." We had to
smile at that. He said "What I like the most, which surprised me, is
your doubling up on your goals. With some slick maneuvering, you made
the CEO ask you to fight the security manager, to make that guy better
after you tore him down, and made him your man. Then you made the CEO
give up his evil ways, and actually like it. How did you know he would
choose you to fight, and not Pete or me?" I said "Anybody?" Rod said
"His type thinks muscles replace brains. He knew Stephen had a real
brain, and you strong silent types were there for a reason, so he
figured you two were his enforcers. Pete encouraged that with the coin
toss. And Stephen wears thick glasses. The choice was obvious." Nigel
nodded. I said "Never underestimate your opponent."
Nigel said "But weren't you taking a risk letting him keep his
knife?" I smiled and said, "Not really. I could have knocked him out
with Ki, from 10 feet away. I could have done what I did with him,
blindfolded and with my hands tied behind my back. You haven't gotten
to that level yet, but we actually train that way. The only risk was to
him, and what the CEO wanted to see. By the way, Nigel and I will be
meeting the security manager tonight, where we first met. I passed him
a note as we were leaving." Pete grinned and said, "Cementing the
relationship. Another rescue." I said "He has potential." Nigel said
"Going to tell him we are real adepts? That will drive him up a wall."
We all grinned. I said "Tempting. Depends on how it goes. We need good
men. He's wasted there. Jan, think we'll have any trouble buying the
stock?" She said "Probably not, if he keeps his mouth shut. If word
gets out before the deal is complete, the price will go up before it,
which it will after the sale. I expect it to double. Neat how you got
him to stay and do a good job. Gives us time to find a replacement, and
still have him not resent being fired. I want you as my boss!" We
laughed. I said "We need a department admin for manufacturing. Anybody
here want the title for the department? Remember, there are going to be
other departments, and you get to take your pick, based on your
interests. You will have people to take care of the actual management.
All you need to do is make sure they aren't messing things up too much.
Think about it and let me know what you have in mind. We also have
schoolmates who might be available for some of those jobs, if they want
them, and maybe qualified family members. I think we are finished for
today. Anything else?" The always horny Chad said "Yes. That kicking
and screaming thing." Our clothes flew off and we piled onto each
other. We went right into the link at high intensity, and it didn't
take very long for us all to finish. While we were recovering, Rod
said, "We needed that." Chad said "Who needs an excuse?" We laughed.
Nigel and I stayed, while the rest left.
I said "We should tell Glena we aren't going to be home for supper."
He said "Right. Doing it now." We sat, still naked, with our arms
around each other. He said "You were magnificent!" I said "You all
helped." He said "We did, but you put it all together and made it
happen." I said "You wouldn't mind if I told you something nice?" He
poked me. I said "I think you will be just as good at that as I am,
someday, more than any of the other adepts we have. You just need some
more experience and confidence. That's what I'm arranging for you. I
think you already figured it out. The others know and agree, and
approve. You should already know that, too." He answered by kissing me.
We just sat there for a while. Then he said, "You know, that last bit
went awfully fast. Ready for another?" I said "I suppose so." My
monster was a lot more committed to the idea than I had expressed. He
started the link before he grabbed my nuts. We kept doing that for a
long while, before we finally made each other squirt. We sat for a
while, exchanging love, and then went to take a shower. We decided to
dress informally for the meeting at the steak house, so we ported home
to change clothes. We sat for a little, and I said, "Still going to
have a burger?" He said "Yeah, but with bacon and mushrooms on it." I
said "Sounds good. I don't suppose you'll want to share it." He thought
it over and said, "I could let you have a bite." I poked him and said,
"Thanks."
We ported to a place near the restaurant where we wouldn't be seen,
and walked to it and went inside. Nigel said "He isn't here yet, but
he's on his way." We asked for a private table, and told them who we
were expecting to join us. We ordered tea and appetizers, and said we
would wait for our guest before ordering more. After a few minutes, we
got our munchies. Then Nigel said, "He's here." He came to our table,
and noticed how we were sitting, and smiled. We stood and shook hands,
and sat down. I said "I saw your reaction. Habits are hard to break. I
always have to have the door in view, and my back secure." He nodded
and said, "I know the feeling." I said "When we met you, it was our
first time here. Anything you would recommend?" He said "Nothing in
particular. It's all good. I eat here often." I said "We know." Nigel
said "I didn't know." I said "You didn't know you knew. Review how he
came in." He said "Right. Comfortably oriented." Matt said "You people
continue to amaze me." I said to Nigel, "We're people. Nice of him to
notice that." Nigel said "Very." We grinned, and said to Matt, "Sorry,
Matt. We like to have as much fun as we can when we aren't working,
because what we do for work can have enormously serious consequences."
He said "And what would that be?" I said "To start, I have not lied in
your presence." He said "But you have misled us?" I said "More than a
little, and not at all. We do a lot of things, but in your area of
interest, we assist, as consultants, and occasionally as action teams,
different parts of our government." I showed him my Bureau ID. He said
"Wow!" Nigel grinned and said, "We hear that a lot." I said "Let's
order." We did. I asked him about his life, and he told us. We didn't
talk much while we ate. Nigel's burger was great, and I was allowed
only one bite of it.
While we were waiting for dessert, I asked Matt, "Why did you do your
job so poorly for your CEO, regarding us?" He said "I didn't approve of
what that slimy snake had in mind. I guess I couldn't keep that out of
my quality of work. I was ready to quit." Nigel said "Actual snakes
aren't slimy. It's just their scales are shiny like they are polished."
I grinned, and said "We have a lot of interests. Practically
everything. Anyway, you are wasted in that job. You have good
potential. We'll think of something better for you soon." He said
"Where did you learn to fight like that?" I said "From my father, and
at our school, where I teach it now, along with other things." He said
PhDs, and teaches at our school for geniuses who want to go into
security. When he isn't doing more important work." Matt said "Wow!" I
said to Nigel, "You just wanted to make him say that again, didn't
you?" He grinned and said, "But it's true." I poked him. Nigel said to
Matt, "That's not all. This morning he prompted me to tell him how our
meeting would go. I don't know how he did it, but it happened just like
he led me to say. He MADE it happen. After we left you, we had another
meeting. He explained to us why your boss would want him to fight you.
You and your boss didn't know he's our fighting instructor." Matt shook
his head in wonder, and said, "You were going to buy the company from
the beginning?" I said "After we did our research, I decided to do
that, yes. Everything we did in our meeting with your group was to
support that, which included motivating you and that slimy snake to
stay and do a good job. For now. One of my doctorates is in
psychology." I could see him realizing just how much we played them.
Then dessert came.
After dessert, he said, "You haven't explained how what you said here
when we met, doesn't make you adepts." I said to Nigel, "Do you think I
expected him to bring that up?" He said "Yes. He would, if he's any
good. And I wouldn't have known that if you hadn't asked me. I really
have to work on that!" I said to Matt, "If you really want to know,
you're going to have to reorder some of your beliefs." Matt exclaimed,
"Oh shit! I really fucked up. I found the adepts I didn't believe in,
which I didn't want to find, right under my nose. You must have been
laughing your heads off at us." I said "Not really, but we did
appreciate the irony. Nigel is our newest recruit. This whole situation
was a training event for him, or we wouldn't have bothered. He's more
behind in his training than he should be, because he took some months
off to take care of me when I was recovering from a brain injury. You
are half right. He and Pete are adepts, and there are more. While I
recognized their potential and trained them, and still manage some of
their training, I'm not an adept anymore. I recovered my memory, but
not my psychic abilities. Do I have to tell you this is secret
information?" He said "No you don't, and you knew that. I'm your man."
I nodded. I said "There are more surprises, but for another time. One
thing you should know. We are of the Light. We do not use our abilities
to harm others unjustly. If you want to be associated with us, you must
be that way as well." He said "Understood. I already figured that out
when we fought. Your honor couldn't be faked, and your flow of Ki
included your compassion. I'm with you."
I said "We are in the process of expanding in a gigantic way, here
and internationally. We have money and technology, and goals. What we
are short of is people we can trust. Let us know what you can do for
us. What your personal goals are, and your abilities. We will pay for
any education, and you already know we pay employees well." He said
"Will do." I said to Nigel, "Please ask Pete to make a restricted
active drawing of you, and send it, so you can give it to Matt. That
shouldn't take too long." We were drinking our coffee when it showed up
on the table. I nodded at Nigel. He gave the small drawing to Matt and
told him how to use it. Matt tried it and I could see it worked. I said
"Anybody can use the special pictures that way. Making them is the hard
part. Doing mind contact without a picture is much harder. That's what
you heard us talking about. This technology is extremely dangerous in
many ways, which is why we aren't making it public." He said another
"Wow!" We grinned. I said "Contact Nigel if there is something
important to tell us." We stood and shook hands. I said "We do more
among friends." I made to hug him, and he accepted. I gave him my love,
and he was really surprised. Nigel grinned and said, "He as born with
that ability. We can never get enough of that." Matt said "I see what
you mean!" I paid the bill, and we walked out together. We said
goodbye, and ported home from a dark place.
It was late, so we went right to bed. Under the covers, Nigel said,
"All that was just for me? Did the others know?" I said "I didn't tell
them, but they know I use missions for training. Pete said it would be
good for training, when we first met Matt, remember?" He said "Oh.
Right. They did know. I should have expected it, but I still have a
difficult time believing people care that much about me." I said "With
all of us, our love is never one way. They love you just as much as you
love them. Well, if such a thing could be measured." I kissed his tears
away, with my love.
