The Adventures of Stevie #180
These stories were told to me by friends and other people. Some of them
are true. Some of them are only partly true. Some of them should have
been true. LOL
My first post about Stevie ("Call me Stephen!") was when he was 12 and
in summer camp and was told by another camper. This was from a time
before computers would fit on a desk and when people communicated with
friends in other countries by actual letters sent through the postal
service. When children did this those friends were called "penpals".
Carlos is Stevie's penpal in Argentina and knows English. This is a
fictional contrivance to enable Stevie to tell us his stories because
he isn't here in person. I think.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
Stevie's school is for gifted children who don't fit in regular schools.
The stories may not be posted in chronological order.
Stevie is 14 in this story, after year 4 special school, in the Summer.
The Adventures of Stevie #180 "The Ring Saga"
Dear Carlos,
While the others were at activities, I stayed back in the cabin, with
Rod, Chad, and Pete. I said "I want to make something for Debbie. I
thought you might want to watch. First I'm going to think." I felt them
connect to watch. I was going to think about using 4th manipulation for
very fine work, using automatic procedures with mnemonic operators,
which could be used for duplication. And then I was going to think
about crystals, and how information can be stored in them, like charms.
When I looked up, 20 minutes had passed. I said "I failed to work out
one of the things I wanted to do. Energy to matter conversion. I know
it's possible, but not how to do it in a usable way. I have to study
atomic theory some more. The Philosopher's Stone will have to wait."
Pete said "So you were looking for a way to turn lead into gold?" I
said "Something like that. I will just have to use stainless steel for
it now."
"Here goes. First, I'm taking a gem crystal from my lab, and hold it
in front of me here, with 4th fingers. Now I'm using tool parameters I
set up, which work like the real things, to cut and polish the crystal
into a jewel. In this case, it is a star ruby, with a round dome top,
and not faceted. Done. Now I see what size it's become, I can make the
setting. I would rather use gold, for it's color, but I don't have
enough, So I'll use steel. It's more durable, anyway. I'm forming a
ring from this piece of bar stock, into the size which will fit
Debbie's ring finger. It has a whole through the top, narrower on the
bottom of it, to set the stone in, which I'm doing now. Normally, this
steel would be much to hard to form over the stone to secure the
setting, but using 4th tools, it takes no effort at all. I just have to
be careful to let the heat which is generated by this process,
dissipate safely, so it won't damage the stone, or change the
properties of the metal. Then I'm polishing the metal to a high shine.
Next I'm using a pinpoint 4th tool to engrave the inside to read 'From
Stephen to Deborah, with Love'. Last, I'm engraving my love into the
structure of the crystal, so that when she puts the stone to her heart
or forehead, she can feel my undying love for her."
I said "Think she will like it?" They just sat there with their
mouths open. I clapped my hands together loudly, and said, "Wake up!"
Chad actually had some tears, when he said, "That's the most beautiful
thing I ever heard of." I looked at the ring critically, and didn't
think it was especially good looking. In fact, it was rather plain, as
rings go. Rod saw that, and poked me, and said, "He means the idea,
silly." I said, with a sheepish grin and brilliant wit, "Oh." Rod said
"Let's go find the director, and set up the ceremony." We did.
It rained, so we had the dance social in the dining hall after rest
time, after supper. I liked that, because the floor was much better for
dancing than the outdoor asphalt basketball court, and it had a stage.
I asked Mrs. Insane if she had a record of the Nutcracker ballet. She
did, and was very interested in having that kind of a dance show, in
between regular dances. Chad and the girls liked it too. We got some
stage costumes ready for us to change into, after we demonstrated the
usual dances in the beginning. We got to the social early, to warm up
and practice. That's critical if you don't want to get injured. Ballet
is the most difficult exercise for the human body to do, specially
because it's completely unnatural, and you have to make it look
effortless. That's not all we had planned for the show. Rod and Pete
were going to do some tap dancing first, after I ported them to the
school to get their tap shoes. Maybe I forgot to tell you we knew those
kinds of dancing, but at our school, when we study a subject, we learn
ALL about it.
Debbie and Wanda were all excited about what we were going to do.
Chad liked the dressing up part, and loved the way his tight's felt,
and kept asking Wanda to feel them too. Rod said, "Careful, or you will
be showing everybody how much you like that." I said "Too late." Tights
don't hide boners very well, even when you try to pull down your tunic.
I didn't think it would be a problem, because he put his pants on over
them, for the regular dances we would do first. We waited backstage,
for when we would go on. Then it was time for our Tango. Chad and
Wanda, and Debbie and I danced the Tango, like we did before. Then a
Waltz. We put in everything we had into the dances, and the applause
when were done told us we did well. Then there were regular dances on
the main floor for everybody. Then Rod and Pete did their tap dancing.
We watched from the wings, which is what the sides of the stage where
the audience can't see, are called. They were very good. The audience
thought so too. Then there were more regular dances. Then we were on.
The girls didn't have their point shoes, so we couldn't do it
perfectly, but we did some basic couples dances, called "Pas De Deaux",
to "Sugar Plumb" and "White Swan". Then Chad danced the "Chinese Dance"
and I danced the "Russian Dance." Then we ended with all 4 of us
dancing a simple waltz to "Waltz of the Flowers". Then silence. I
wondered what happened. Then some of the counselors applauded, and then
everybody did, and it sounded like thunder. We had to bow a few times
before they got quiet enough for Mrs. Insane to announce there would be
a little ceremony next, before going back to the cabins.
I dragged Debbie to center stage. I faced the audience and said, "Hi.
I'm Stephen. Some of you might have heard about me." That drew a lot of
laughter. I said "This is Debbie. I have something to say to her, I
want the whole world to hear. Since they wouldn't all fit in this
dining hall, it will just have to be in front of you, my good friends."
I got down on one knee and held her hand, and said in a loud stage
voice, "Debbie, I love you, more than anything. When we are old enough,
I want to be with you forever. Please accept this ring, which I have
made for you, to be yours always, just like I am yours, always. With
it, you always feel my love, even when we are apart." I put it on her
finger. It fit. She said loud enough so people could hear, through her
tears, "Stephen, I accept, with all my heart. I love you." Then she
pulled me up, and we kissed. Chad came up behind me, and Wanda behind
Debbie, and gently pulled us apart. If they hadn't, we still might be
there kissing. There was more thunderous applause, and some wet eyes.
More than I expected.
We went backstage, and sat around with Mr. and Mrs. Insane. Chad said
"There is something special about that ring, Debbie. Put it next to
your heart." She did, and said, "Oh!" I smiled and hugged her, and
said, "That's my actual love for you, you feel when you do that, and
when you touch your forehead with it, too. I put it into the stone when
I cut and polished it, when I made the ring this afternoon. The stone
is a star ruby, and the metal is non magnetic stainless steel. Nobody
can duplicate the way it's made. After mine, your hands are the only
ones which have touched the ring. It's unique, just like you are, but
not as pretty, naturally." She cried some more. Then she tried to say,
"It's beautiful." I said "Only a reflection of your own beauty."
Rod said "There is something else. He cut and polished the stone, and
formed the band, with his mind, which he didn't know how to do until
this afternoon when he tried it. We watched him do it, right in the air
in front of us. You have the first ring ever made that way, and
probably the only one he will ever make." Pete told her, "There is an
engraving inside the band." She looked, and REALLY cried. Wanda hugged
her. Mrs. Insane said, "That's enough for tonight, girls. Back to your
cabin." I got to kiss Wanda and Debbie before they left, and so did the
other boys. Then Mrs. Insane turned to Mr. Insane and said, "That was
so incredibly romantic, I could cry." Then she did, and he gave her a
tissue. Actually, we all needed some. Pete said to Chad, "Romantic, is
an understatement! He could teach a course on that." Chad poked him and
said, "Silly, he just did." Pete said "Oh. Right."
Your friend,
Stephen
