The Adventures of Stevie #67
These stories were told to me by friends and other people. Some of them
are true. Some of them are only partly true. Some of them should have
been true. LOL
My first post about Stevie ("Call me Stephen!") was when he was 12 and
in summer camp and was told by another camper. This was from a time
before computers would fit on a desk and when people communicated with
friends in other countries by actual letters sent through the postal
service. When children did this those friends were called "penpals".
Carlos is Stevie's penpal in Argentina and knows English. This is a
fictional contrivance to enable Stevie to tell us his stories because
he isn't here in person. I think.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
Stevie's school is for gifted children who don't fit in regular schools.
The stories may not be posted in chronological order.
Stevie is 12 in this story, in year 2 of summer camp.
Special note. In story #1, which Winston wrote about some things in
year 2 of summer camp, he didn't write all he could have, and wrote
some things differently, so he wouldn't get in trouble. Stevie writes
honestly.
The Adventures of Stevie #67 "Dan Tells"
Dear Carlos,
Dan is really a good coach. We did baseball as a morning activity. He
helped me a lot. The other kids tried to show me before, but I didn't
get it. He saw what I was doing wrong, and told me exactly what I
needed to correct it. Only a really good teacher can do that. It's not
enough to know how to do something to teach it, you have to know how to
teach, too, which is an altogether different thing which takes
different skills and knowledge. The other boys noticed it too. They are
beginning to love him. I like that.
I asked Dan for a private talk in outside free time. We sat in the
same place where I introduced myself to him. I leaned back like before,
and made sure he noticed I saw where he was looking. We smiled. I said,
"This is something you need to work on, if you don't want people to
know. It's a dead giveaway." He said "I know, but you have a lot more
to show somebody like me." I said "There was something you said before
when were here, and when you were talking with Jeremy, I want to ask
you about. Tell me more about your parents, and the little town where
you live. I have a good reason. It's not just curiosity." He told me.
"My parents, and my whole town, are Christian Fundamentalists. They
take their beliefs very seriously. Anybody who doesn't believe EXACTLY
like they do, is of the Devil, and will go to Hell when they die, which
isn't soon enough to suit them. We have our own school. They don't
teach evolution. Or much science. We study the Bible. Most of what they
believe is in the Bible, but a lot of things which are in it, they
don't believe. Anybody who tries to tell them that, gets whipped almost
to death. If they find out I am gay, they will do that to me until I
change, and I know I can't. I know what you think, that the law says
you can't hurt a child that much, but they don't care about the law,
because they follow what they think is God's law, which they think is
more important. They could get arrested and put in prison, but they
would still believe it was what God wanted to happen. The police can
only punish people who commit crimes. That is after there are suffering
victims, which doesn't do them much good. There was a boy who rumors
said was gay. He disappeared 2 years ago, and nobody would talk about
it. Some of us noticed there was a lump in the ground in the forest
which looked like it was dug up and put back. I think they killed him
and buried him there."
I screamed "NO!" People looked in our direction. I looked around too,
so they wouldn't think it came from me. So did Dan when he saw me do
that. It worked. I said "First I have to tell you that I can tell you
are more intelligent, and think faster than most boys your age." He
said "Thank you. I think you are smarter, but giving complements isn't
why we are on this hill, is it?" I said "You can't live there." He said
"But I do." I said "I meant it 2 ways. Existing like you do there,
isn't living. It must be torture for you! You can't stay there. They
WILL find out someday. I don't want you to DIE. Not that way, not for
such a stupid reason." He said "But I don't have anyplace else to live,
and if I did, they would take me back. The law says they can. I don't
really want to leave my parents." I said "Even if they would let you be
whipped and killed?" He said "I suppose so. I love them. I can't help
it." I said "I understand. Really I do. I would have let my mother kill
me, if my father had not stopped her." He said too loudly, "WHAT?" I
told him what happened. We both cried. He said "You really DO know. I
don't really want to die, not after you've shown me how good life can
be, but I don't think I have much choice in the matter." You know I
couldn't let this go. I had to fix it.
I asked him, "Do you have a birth certificate?" He said "No, I was
born at home, and circumcised by the midwife. My parents don't believe
in the government interfering with us, so I don't have one of those
certificates." I asked "Has anybody ever taken your fingerprints?" He
said "No, not that I remember." I asked "Do they have photographs of
you?" He said. "No, they wouldn't take the film to get developed. We
have a camera, but nobody uses it." I said "So if you left them, they
couldn't prove you were their son?" He said "I don't see how they
could." I said "How hard would they try to find you?" He said "VERY
hard, for about 20 miles through the country, with horses, dogs and
guns, for a few weeks. I couldn't escape. They would catch me. I
wouldn't live through what they would do to me." I asked "Would they go
to the cities? Would they get the police involved?" He said "No they
wouldn't. They don't want the police to know what they do. Even if I
could outrun the dogs and horses, I would have no place to go. It's
impossible."
I said "I have done what people thought was impossible. This one is
easier. I can arrange for you to get out, and for a place for you to
live with a loving family who won't care if you are gay. I have done
this before, for Jeremy. Your escape is a little extra, but not that
hard. Your people don't count on runaways having outside help. The only
things I can't arrange, is for you to believe I can do it, and for you
to want to do it when the time comes. So, to the first question, do you
believe I can do this, with the help I can get? If you don't, I can
show you some things I can do, which would really surprise you. Well?"
Dan said "I would like to believe you, but proof would help a lot." I
said "That's fair. The other question?" He said "Yes, I do want to
leave. If you can convince me it can really happen, I will go along
with it." I said "I can convince you, but I don't know how much of that
it will take. For a start, I go to a special school for extra smart
kids, which trains us just for this kind of work. My father teaches
part time there. He does this work too, and I already have been on one
of those jobs. You don't have to believe my word about this. Ask Chad.
He goes to the same school. I will tell him it's alright, in front of
you, so you can see I'm not telling him what to say. Ask him PRIVATELY
about what I told you about me, my father, and our school, because
information about our school is not for the public. Okay?" He said
"Yes."
I said "Before we go do that, I have one more question about
something I haven't been able to figure out. Why in the WORLD did they
send you here? It doesn't look like something they would do." He smiled
and said, "They heard this camp had religious services. Most of the
other ones don't. They heard about the inspections, and thought this
camp was like military training. They wanted to toughen me up to fight
for the Lord. They sent my uncle to drive me into the city to register
for the camp, and here I am." I said "So they didn't know the services,
which are for anybody who WANTS to go to them, is for all the kinds
which parents and campers ask for, not just theirs? Wow, were they
fooled! But you can't escape from here. That would make too much
trouble for the camp, and the police would have to investigate. You
have to go back home, and escape from there. Tell me, do the dogs
patrol the place where you found the possible burial site? Can somebody
get to that place from the outside world, without them knowing it?" He
said "I think so. There aren't any of our dogs supposed to be there." I
said "One more thing. If you vanished without a trace, and there was a
new thing next to the other one at the same time, which looked just
like it, like somebody else was buried there, what would people think
happened to you?" He said "Oh my God! You're a genius. You DO know
about this kind of thing." I said "Right on both counts. I really am a
genius, and so is Chad. My special school only invites geniuses. You
are not too dumb yourself. I'm impressed. You think very well, and
fast. I like that a lot. You don't mind if I think I might love you?"
He grinned and said "That's your first dumb question of the day." We
laughed and hugged.
Things happened fast. We went to Chad first. He confirmed what I told
Dan. Then Chad and I demonstrated some fancy fighting skills. Then I
ran up a tree like I did the wall in school. That really impressed him,
and Chad too, who heard about it but never saw me do it before. Then we
told Tommy all about everything. I asked him to arrange a private
meeting with the camp director, while Jeremy minded my cabin mates.
Here is how that meeting went. I called the shots.
I told Mr. Insane "I have a future life and death of a boy to discuss
with you. The danger isn't right away, but I need to start working on
it while we can still have time to set up the rescue. I need your help.
To get it, I am going to have to say and do things which aren't normal
for a little boy like I look like, to do. That's why I have Tommy here
with me, to verify some of the things I will be telling you. First you
need to understand I really am a 12 year old boy, on the outside, and
so are most of my emotions. Intellectually, I'm more than most adults.
I'm a genius, and I go to a special school for geniuses. That has to be
a secret. You will find out why in a minute, when we get past the trust
issue. We have already established that you trust me to keep secrets.
Can I trust you not to talk about what I'm going to say to you, that
I'm not allowed to, so we can save a very good boy FROM BEING WHIPPED
TO DEATH?"
He said "Is the boy here in camp?" I said. "Yes. The danger is when
he goes home. The whole isolated town is run by religious fanatics who
will whip him to death when they find out he is gay, which they WILL,
sooner or later. It happened before. I won't risk it happening again,
and I know you don't want it to. I study the kind of things which can
help rescue him. My father teaches it at my school. We have done this
kind of thing before. Tommy can verify all this. I need to call my
father as soon as possible, so he can get started on the plans. He will
do it, because he knows I would do it myself if he doesn't help, and he
loves me." He said "I will give you all the help I can, but I need to
know why can't we just keep him here, and send him someplace safe." I
said "They would make such a stink, this camp would be closed forever,
after the law got involved. They are fanatics, who don't care about the
law. I won't place this camp and it's staff and campers in such danger,
not even for somebody I love. He would not want live with that. He
didn't tell me, I just know. I have a plan. He has to go home. We will
rescue him from there in a way which will make them think he is dead,
so they won't look for him. The boy thinks it will work, and he is the
best judge of that. Dan is very smart. You can listen to my call. I
would like that, but I will be speaking VERY fast, because father will
be recording it for playing it back later for his team. Tommy?" Tommy
said. "I teach fighting skills at his school. What he says about it,
himself, and his father, are true. They are more skilled than I can
understand, and you know about my skills."
Mr. Insane said "This is so sudden, I hardly know what to believe." I
said "Everybody out. I will talk to the director alone." They left.
Tommy looked worried. I winked at him, and he relaxed. I said "I can
demonstrate some things which might help you believe what I told you."
I picked up the pencil on his desk, and broke it in half between the
tips of my three extended fingers. I never saw anybody else who could
do that. He looked a little impressed. Then I took the sharp half, and
spun and threw it at the wood ceiling, so it stuck in it. That was
harder to do than with the chopstick. Then I took my shoes and socks
off and I jumped up and turned in the air so my toes could grab the
pencil from where it was stuck, and landed on the other foot, with my
pencil grabbing foot at a convenient place in the air in front of him,
for him to take it from between my toes. That impressed him some more.
Then I punched a hole in the wooden wall with my fist, which made a big
mess. That impressed him most of all, even though that was the easiest
thing I did up to then. He had a little combo safe against the wall. It
took me less then a minute to dial it open. I said "This is the least
of what I can do. How much more do you need to be convinced I have the
skill and knowledge I say I do?" He said, "No, that's enough. Wow." I
said "Good, because the next thing I would have done would be to have
somebody call you, such as the Chief of Police in xxxxxxx, to tell you
some things. I don't want to get the law involved right now. They might
not like what we will have to do. Please don't tell the others what I
showed you. They can't do most of that. I don't want them to think I'm
more of a freak than they already think I am. Can we use the phone?" We
could. I put my shoes and socks back on and called in the boys, and we
called father and told him everything. The only thing which was a
problem, was how to communicate with Dan when he went home. Father
would work on that, after he investigates the town. Dan is going to
make a map of the place, and we are going to take pictures and
measurements of all of Dan, even naked. Father is sending somebody to
pick them up right away. Mr. Insane talked to father too. We are going
to do this. We have to.
Dan and Mr. Insane were really impressed at how fast and efficient
we were. It took just a few hours to get everything moving. Then we had
to wait for the investigation of the town and surrounding area, which
would take about a week, before finalizing the plans, and then wait
till the end of camp and Dan going home. We told Jeremy what we planned
and why. He cried for Dan, and offered any help we could use, which was
none, except what he usually gives, which is love. That helps more than
people know.
So, we went back to the usual way we were at camp. Not really. We
tried, but there was a lot to think about. It took us a while to settle
down, but we did. A lot of boy play didn't hurt. Not at all. Dan slept
around, because everybody wanted him. I was glad for him. After his
rescue, I think I might have a new brother. I like that a lot.
Your friend,
Stephen
