Hi Fortsters,
I dropped my guys off at the airport earlier today and just got a
phone call stating that they'd arrived safely. I miss them already,
but I'm still sort of on a boy high. I know you know what I mean.
I want to thank all who contributed in making their visit to The Fort
this week memorable and educational. They send their love to all and
especially Grant, Chad, VV, Rikard andthe Fort Kittens for his
excellent posts that caught their eyes.
They did an amazing thing this week. They located the only gay boy in
the tiny county we visited. As far as he knew he was the only one. His
name was Daniel (15) and he was head over heels in love with T-Bone.
For those of you who don't know, T-Bone is 16 and is extremely good
looking. I can imagine that most of you have photos of him in your
collections, if you collect, because of an incident a few years ago
involving his ex-boyfriend and the trading of photos. All that is
behind him now. But he IS memorable, I promise you. So is Mac, but
T-Bone is a blonde and has a great tan. Trust me.
Bone's gaydar is better than mine and apparently so is Mac's (and he
didn't even know he had gaydar!) I did see this boy in McDonalds (he
works there and served us breakfast almost every morning and he was SO
out of place) I saw the way he was looking at T-Bone but I thought he
was jealous of Bone because of the way the teenage girl he worked with
was looking at Tim. We had just sat down to eat and Mac said, 'Oh my
God, did you see that guy Daniel looking at you? I thought he was
going to pass out.' T-Bone said that he was kind of obvious and I had
to get them to explain what I'd missed. It happened again on Monday
and Tuesday and by Wednesday they had decided to see what Daniel would
do if given the chance. Tim asked him how to get to the Lake Beach
which substitutes for a swimming area up there (but they both already
knew where it was). So Daniel immediately told them he could show
them. So they borrowed my car that afternoon and had a date with
Daniel. T-Bone told me that they mostly talked about being gay up in
the mountains and how bad that was. Mac said that Daniel was star
struck with Bone. (Who can blame him?) Mac said that Daniel couldn't
believe it when T-Bone came right out and said he and Mac were gay and
talked like they knew Daniel was too. And everyone in town thinks
T-Bone is a TV or movie star. LOL! We heard that at Easter too. Some
of the kids we met thought T-Bone was on the Disney Channel. So Bone
got Daniel to talk about his fantasies and it was sad but very sweet.
His fantasy was to have a friend to share his secrets with. The only
one he'd told was a girl he'd known since he was three. So they
invited him to dinner (and I was the freaking cook!) and they went
over and met his Mom. Guess who doesn't have a Dad? Yep. So it was
dinner with Doc and the guys. I told Daniel about how to stay safe
with his secret, which he was mainly doing anyway. I explained that
his life will really begin when he goes off to college. He said, and I
quote, 'My life began the day you brought T-Bone into McDonald's.' He
and his Mom are poor as church mice and they live in a church owned
home (she is organist and music director at their church). So no
internet for him, but he can use the one at the town library so
they're going to e-mail each other. Here's the kicker. His Mom (and
everyone they know) believe that homosexuality is a sin. He has to
live with that, every day. If anyone found out, he'd be dead meat in
that little town. So, he's my friend too, but I'm not claiming him,
not yet anyway, I want to let my burgeoning boylover T-Bone handle
this. But I will visit him when I go up. Bone and Mac are already
committed to coming back next time we're together (though Christmas up
there is not my favorite idea). Anyway, Wednesday night while I
cleaned up and wrote some e-mails the three guys were out on the porch
snuggling; Daniel and Mac on either side of Bone. They were talking
and watching about ten thousand lightning bugs put on a show. Daniel
got his first kiss and more. LOL! Mac came running in to ask for
napkins and made his SKWEE! sound that he makes when he's excited.
It strikes me that my son T-Bone is maybe one of the most thoughtful
people I know and Mac is a close second. T-Bone gave Daniel enough
fantasy material to last a lifetime and Mac was completely NOT
jealous. He says Daniel loves him too and that they're friends.
Imagine being in Daniel's position and then a boy god like Bone shows
up and treats you like you are someone important. Then I realized that
he was doing as I'd taught him. I realized this when T-Bone TOLD me
why he treated Daniel that way. He had walked in Daniel's shoes and I
was the one who made him feel special. Now Bone had touched another's
life and made an indelible mark. He is remarkable.
So, my point is that YOU have a chance to make a difference and as it
turns out the difference you make may be passed on in turn by the next
generation. I suppose the converse is true as well. So, if you have
the opportunity to make a positive impact in a boy's life, please do
so. And if you have the presence of mind to spare a boy from a selfish
urge, please do so, as this mercy too may be passed on.
