In short: the system monitor turned out to be grossly out of calibration,
due primarily to the video card's gamma being set to 1.0; with it set to
the maximum Micro$oft's videogame Control Panel thinks appropriate, it is
still out -- but <after> now looks just right and <afterafter> is, indeed,
too bright.
