It's been a while since I read it, but I think that pair are one of the
first to try going between in Dragonsdawn. That was always the
impression I got anyway. If so, and we assume your second possibility of
matter going between, imagine their shock at suddenly being inside
somewhere where they can't move, breathe or see. Remembering that if
they are one of the first few then going between doesn't come as
naturally as it does to those in the 9th Pass so chances are they'd
panic rather than try to get out...
