Our local Red Star, the planet Mars, is going to come the closest to us
that it ever has in recorded history, according to astronomers, on 27
August. It will be over 25 arcseconds across, which is twice the
diameter it was in 1995. It's called a "perihelic opposition."
The comic strip "User Friendly" did a Sunday strip about this, and if
you click to show subject headings on the comments below the picture,
and scroll down to the main heading "The Red Planet...." you'll see that
the author isn't the only one connecting an SF world to this event. :-)

It does make me wonder....if Pern can have an opposition that's too far
away for a Threadfall, then can they also have one where the Red Star
comes closer than usual, and the Fall is thus earlier/longer than the
Star Stones would predict? Could Thread even start falling before the
Star Stones prediction is supposed to happen?
