You'll find a long list of problems with DLG here:
http://www.srellim.org/pern/dlg_errata.htm
DLG has a variety of sources:
* The stories that had been published up to 1989.
* Interviews with AMC and maybe access to unpublished notes on future
stories.
* Information on animals, arts and crafts etc that might reasonably be
supposed to exist on Pern.
* Some roleplaying game material by Nye - new characters etc. DLG might
have been originally intended to be published by a games company, or
maybe Nye had the writeups lying around from an unfinished project.
The Second Edition (1997) was a reprint of the First with extra pages
added covering the new stories.
