Describing the Pern series as 'epic fantasy' is wrong - it's actually
science fiction. The dragons are supposed to be real ones! I suspect
Campbell first published Pern in Analog, a hard SF magazine, just to see
his readers boggle at seeing a dragon on the cover.
Myself I'd put it in the 'science fantasy' category.

A list of Pern books should include a reading order. They are best read
in the order they were written (which is *not* the chronological order).
Hang around here and the Pern FAQ will appear which includes a complete
list of books and the correct order.
