I will go straight to the point...

Why use passwords?

Because nobody besides a police officer during working ours in the duty
of his job can download and view copyrighted material.

While it is perfectly possible to download something by mistake, and
not be subjected to prosecution, it is not possible to justify
downloading something by mistake and then search for the password with
the full knowledge that it will contain something illegal.

In other words, any vigilante doing that is breaking the law, and will
have to answer in court for his actions. "Helping the police" is not a
valid excuse in a court of justice to download and view forbidden music
and films.

ALWAYS USE PASSWORDS!

(Even if they come in the title of the post!)

Using a password makes it impossible to download/view something by
mistake, anyone going to the RIAA and claiming he viewed by mistake a
password protected post, will have lots of explanation to do and risk
prosecution.
