Altopia, in my opinion, has always been the best.
In the early days, their retention was a bit poor; but they've always
carried *all* the newsgroups, never honored cancels, and have been
pretty much the gold standard. That's why, in spite of my ISP having
"free" newsservice for years and me on a *very* tight (read almost
nonexistant) budget, I've stuck with them all these years.
Lately their retention has been so good it's getting to the ridiculous
stage. I guess that's because disk space has gotten to be ridiculously
cheap.
Right now I just got around to downloading some cartoons that are about
two months old. All still there.
