Fountain soda involves flavor-syrup + water + CO2. For pre-mix, these
three are mixed together in standard proportions (1 part syrup
to five parts carbonated water), and usually distributed in metal
cylinders sometimes called "Cornelius canisters".
For post-mix, syrup, usually distributed these days in "bag-in-box"
(BIB) form (plastic bag inside cardboard box) is added to water and CO2
to produce the finished product. So the merchant may have
more control over the proportions involved (a little stronger is
usually better, especially for Dr Pepper :-)). And I think it tends
to taste "fresher" than pre-mix. Perhaps mixing with water increases
"oxidizing" of the flavor elements over time?
