Well, if you agree with me, does that mean you're intelligent too?
Sorry, I just had to say that. :-)
It's a reference to the well known fact that we tend to think that
those who agree with us must be intelligent, because WE are intelligent
ourselves, right?
But how do we know this about someone unless they communicate it to us?
I've known some VERY intelligent people, who couldn't communicate worth
anything. I have a friend who is fluent in seven languages, was a
professor who taught them, and was a professional translator. He has an
IQ of 142. Many times I had to help him fix the problems he caused by
his poor communication skills. He was better with other peoples' words,
than he was with his own. He also illustrates that intelligence isn't
universal, and is also not at all related to common sense. He had a big
problem learning to use his computer, and resisted it. He also didn't
take seriously the computer security precautions I tried to get him to
use. As a result, the last time I heard from him, was when he contacted
me from the prison ward in the hospital near where he is still serving
his sentence. Three other people that were caught with him, in other
countries, because he sent them CDs in the mail, killed themselves,
rather then go to trial.
There are some VERY intelligent people here, who aren't able to
communicate it well. You noticed ME, because I have some skill with
English, but I'm not all that exceptional. Also, remember that not all
who post in these groups have English as their first language. Because
I'm in these newsgroups to work, not play, my communications address
very important issues. Because of this, I try VERY hard to a good job
with them, much more than most people do with what they post, who come
here for fun. This may cause my posts to look more intelligent in
comparison, but WE are NOT our posts. There is much more to each
individual than we can ever show in the newsgroups, even if we wanted
to. Actually, it's my job to prevent them from doing that, to help keep
them from giving away information that could lead them to experience
what my translator friend is going through, or worse.
Many people, out of mental habit, limit their intelligence to just a
few areas. In all else, they're dumb as a post. It's one of the
peculiarities of human nature. An other one, is that, very often, our
prejudices interfere with our thinking, as does our strong feelings, if
we don't understand this and train ourselves to compensate for all of
that.
All of the above can cause intelligent people do and say some awfully
stupid and self destructive things. Is it bad? Yes, very, but it keeps
all us shrinks gainfully employed. :-)
We all have different reasons for posting in these groups. For most
people, expressing their intelligence isn't one of them. Well, if they
have any. :-)
What you said here may make you a little unpopular with some people who
have formed a dislike for me. Maybe you shouldn't do that again?
If you've seen my posts, you KNEW what you'd be getting into when you
posted this to me. Maybe, next time you'll know better. Ha! :-)
