I have found that xnews can be usefull on a day to day search basis,
that is to say that if you dont go for more then about 1 milloin headers
xnews works. Using the filters provided you can get the most recent
posted files
or as I do all the files posted in the last 2 ( including today ) days.
I do this in multimedia for video files and it works for me.
Start now with a certain group and do it every day and you will never
miss a posting.
Leacher I have found can load very big files because it uses the hard
drive to store the headers, xnews uses memory so if you have 4 gig of
memory there is no telling how many hedders xnews can down load before
stalling and failling.
The 53% mark you mentioned is an indication it is a memory problem and
you need more memory ( my guess is that your program uses memory not the
HD to store the headers ). I have downloaded 8 to 10 Million headers
using newsleacher but find it to difficult work with that many files at
once and unless you keep leacher alive I have had problems retriving the
data using multy sessions.
I have hunted for good programs but never found what I wanted. I now use
a combination of xnews and leacher. I aslo use a newsgroup search engine
( for about 2 bucks a month that has nzb support ) to help locate
specific file names and leacher to bring them in.
Hope this helps.
