Hi, I try to give you just a few hints, cause you're basically asking for everything.
An excellent program (for me the best) to record music is the Ableton Live Suite.
As instruments to begin with, I would chose Arturia. With Analog Lab 3 for example, you don't have to know how to program sounds. You have thousands of sounds/instruments at hand, that you can adjust to your liking.
As an effect VST I would check out "112dB Mikron Cascade". It is a delay effect that you can freeze at one time, and then it turns the sound into a drone that just keeps going. Should be useful for some eerie stuff. An effect called space echo could be interesting too.
To start composing look for "ambient" samples. These samples can give you melody/effect basics, so you have something to start with.
The Computer Music magazine has many articles on electronic music. They're on YouTube too.
