Robert Barr - The Dark Island
BBC Radio 4
"The Dark Island" opens on the Atlantic shore of a relatively lonely island
in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Ian McLeod, a local crofter, finds what
he thinks is a torpedo on the shore. Contacting a rocket range on the
island to pass on the information about his discovery, a Naval team soon
descends on the scene to deal with the apparent menace. Accompanying this
team is Nicolson, a security officer intrigued by the discovery.
Further investigation reveals that the torpedo was no ordinary weapon of
war. Instead, it contained a "complete do-it-yourself spy kit with an
international flavour". The contents revealed, amongst other items, a
Finnish passport, British and Swedish money, a United States Services
revolver and East German binoculars. However, Nicolson is more intrigued by
the final item in the torpedo - a fragment of sheet music which appeared to
be from a Hebridean lilt.
Joined by Bill Grant, a fellow security operative, the pair investigate the
sudden appearance of the torpedo but are met with resistance from villagers
and tourists alike.
"The Dark Island" originally aired as a TV serial on BBC TV, starting on
8th July 1962. Later, it was done as this 6-part radio serial, airing on
BBC Radio 4, from 19th September, 1969 to 24th October, 1969. Both the TV
and radio scripts were written by Robert Barr, who went on to write it into
a novel, published in March of 1973. This radio serial is a taunt, fun
listen, very much based in the times, an interesting return to the late
'60's Cold War times.

1) 'A Torpedo is Found' (Friday 19th September 1969 @ 3:05 p.m.)
Lonely and withdrawn, the Outer Hebrides are a long chain of islands,
islets and reefs standing like a break-water off the north-west coast of
Britain. Lying some 50 miles out in the Atlantic and running in an almost
unbroken arc for 150 miles, strangely remote, their population sparse, many
of the smaller islands uninhabited. Off the Atlantic coast of the islands,
foreign trawlers maintain constant patrol, keeping an eye on the rocket
range on South Uist and on other things. It's on one of the smaller,
lonelier islands that the story begins as a crofter waits on the shore
watching for the arrival of a naval launch.

2) 'The Trawler' (Friday 26th September 1969 @ 3:05 p.m.)
On instructions from London, an intelligence officer, Jim Nicolson, and the
crofter, Ian McLeod, have visited the deserted island of Dorica, the Dark
Island, to see if a search is being made for a strange torpedo and its
contents of revolvers, passport and foreign money. They've seen a girl
searching the beach and they've been shot at.

Nicolson and Grant have intercepted coded signals from a foreign trawler
and a reply from one of the islands. In their search for the possible
signaller, they find Mary Somers missing from the hotel. Later, she returns
to report to her uncle, Colonel Jamieson. Still later that same night, the
Colonel's bodyguard, Alec Thomson, who had shot at Nicolson on the 'Dark
island', is found dead in Nicolson's boat.

Nicolson has found a signal-post in an old viking grave on a lonely and
dangerous shore. He's radioed its position to Grant but emerging from the
dugout, he's been ambushed by armed men who've landed on the beach from a
russian trawler. He's been hunted by them across the sand dunes and shot.
Grant calls repeatedly to Nicolson on the personal radio but there's no
reply and he sets out next morning with Major Williams and Ian McLeod to
search for him.

In his search for a lead to the identity of the group of spies operating
from the 'Dark Island', Bill Grant has planted the captured foreign
passport in one of the bedrooms at the hotel. He's rufused to say which
suspect he's chosen but has settled down, armed in the darkness, to await
events. His colleague, Jim Nicolson, is still in hospital recovering from
his wounds.

In his search for the elusive group who are operating an escape route from
the 'Dark Island', Bill Grant had taken to steps on his own - he's planted
a fake passport in a bedroom at the hotel with no immediate result. Later,
near the harbour, he's seen a man whom he's recognised and gone in search
of him. That night, Ian McLeod finds Grant in his hotel bedroom, dead.
Meanwhile, Jim Nicolson has discharged himself from hospital just in time
to hear the news...
