Alex, clearly depressed and aimless since leaving university, finds a hobby: snails. His Oxford professor father is delighted - here is a subject for his next book. Meanwhile, mother sits knitting snails in the conservatory.

Alex falls for a French girl and tries to prove he is normal by eating his snails. His father starts to worry that his book, a study of Alex's snail obsession, is in jeopardy.

Beverly hears the patter of tiny feet. George is aghast, but decides the situation could be turned to his advantage.
