And to balance the whole thing to the other side again: I got to know
the Doctor in the Tom Baker era, and of course for me TB is the best
Doctor. Well, to put some foundation to that opinion I have to say that
after Tom Baker I saw a lot of other Doctors, and when and if available
I watched previous Doctors as well. And I'm still convinced Tom Baker
out-Doctors them all.
But the first Doctor that was interesting for me in a long time after
Tom Baker, was David Tennant. He had the same sense of humor, the same
irreverence, the same oddball characteristics as Tom Baker. It was: The
Doctor again.
Mat Smith was a disappointment, although it still was a series well
worth watching. Perhaps not for a second viewing, but nevertheless. It
was just this Gillan character, and her loverboy. Why not hire a proper
couple of actors for these parts...
Then Jenna Coleman came, and wahey... there was an actress! on the set
again. Almost instantly the quality of Smith's acting improved as well.
I'm not sure what Capaldi will bring to the part. I think he's too much
of an established actor. A less experienced actor would have been more
useful, because in my mind that would have meant: "The Doctor played
by...ehm an actor" as opposed to "A Well Known Character Actor
Playing...The Doctor".
