'Let's get this straight once and for all. I'm holding this shovel, they've employed me to do the job and they're paying me when it's done. I've got a job and you haven't. I'm working and you're watching; and now you're offering me a partnership in my own job.'
Billy, a casual labourer, lives in an old hut on an allotment and scrapes a living by shovelling heaps of coal from the pavement into the cellars of the houses in the northern town where he has lived since childhood. His needs are simple and he is content to work for a low wage in return for his independence until Darkly, a stranger who has been watching him at work, comes up with a proposition for a business partnership.
An allegorical satire of capitalism.
