Noel Coward is writing a new play and desperately wants his favourite theatrical sparring partner Gertrude Lawrence to take the female lead. Lawrence however is in love and has disappeared with her new beau to the other side of the world. He decides instead, having discarded Celia Johnson on the grounds that she is pregnant, to ask actress Greta Cunningham to play the role. All is well until she is found murdered in her dressing room.
All this, a handsome would-be writer with whom Coward falls hopelessly in love and a trip to Pago-Pago before Coward emerges triumphant and unmasks the killer. All harmless fun and the first in a series of plays in which Coward turns variously detective and spy.
