Influenced by a tremendous amount of musical backgrounds, the four members have come together to forge a sound and direction that lifts the fans to a euphoric level that can only be described in the lyrics of the music itself.
"Down To The Wire" is the third album by Chicago foursome Down & Dirty and those into their glam and sleaze should at least already have read about them on these very pages or even better, have one of their albums in their collection.
The things I like most about them is their obvious youthful enthusiasm and the way their sound is a tribute to an era gone by but without Down & Dirty being mere copyists.
And the material on 'Down To The Wire' continues on the chosen path although they have put some more thought into their songwriting by adding unexpected twists and turns here and there making their tunes less one-paced. Now don't think the boys are breaking any new ground here, they have just added these elements to make it more challenging for themselves and you, the listener.
So upon first listen I could only conclude that this newbie is less of an instant affair than anything on previous effort 'Taste Of Rock 'n Roll' but after a couple of spins I was nevertheless singing along to tracks like 'Everythings Shakin' and 'Liquid Romance' with reckless abandon.
Leading this bunch of wolves is Stevie Ray Del Real whose high register vocals are perfectly suited for this type of music and while his banshee like screams are an integral part of the Down & Dirty sound they would be nothing without the guitar screechin' of LA and the solid rhythm section of drummer Joey Dejohns and bassist Ryan Tyler.
Together they deliver plenty of 'down and dirty' grooves, hooks and melodies to make listening to the 11 tracks (yes, there's a so called hidden track) on offer an enjoyable experience but if I had to cherrypick a few tracks in particular I would go for the bouncy opener 'Alive Tonight', the unsteady beat of 'Get Lucky' and 'Diamonds'.
Final verdict: what we are dealing with here is a bunch of young musicians who deliver that much loved old school thrill in fine fashion and fans of sleaze rock who have yet to discover the band are hereby invited to do so pronto.
