INTRO: Well, dear spacefans, we've reached a milestone in this
series: our 1,000th program. It's such a milestone, in fact, that
it's going to be two programs, this week and next.
The count goes back 30 years to January 1983, when we launched our
syndicated public radio program. And as many of you know, we had a
ten year running start as a local late night show on KPFA-FM in
Berkeley California; so 2013 is also the 40th anniversary of the
Hearts of Space program. My original co-producer and co-host
ANNA TURNER was instrumental in creating the national version of
the show. Sadly, Anna passed on in 1996, another too-early victim
of pancreatic cancer. I know she would have been delighted to
celebrate the longevity of the music she loved.
I'm Stephen Hill, producer and host of Hearts of Space, and over
the last 30 years, we've marked our centennial programs with
various specials, usually in a "radio documentary" style. That's
unusual, because as regular listeners know, our practice is to
create a musical experience on the radio -- rather than a radio
program about music. That's also part of Anna Turner's legacy:
she absolutely insisted on an uninterrupted format, even though
it broke every rule about music radio.
To be sure, music journalism and commentary is an important and
valuable format, but the nature of ambient music and contemplative
sound really requires an uninterrupted experience, so that's what
we've tried to create, within the limitations of a one-hour radio
show. And this approach has lasted far beyond our original
expectations.
There are several good reasons why ambient and contemplative music
programming has worked for listeners over the years: first, the
pace of our lives is often driven by external forces we can't
control -- ambient music provides a slow and steady touchstone;
second, it magically supports concentration on all kinds of
creative and focused work; and third, people continue to crave
contact with authentic deep listening experiences and the kind of
inclusive spirituality that music uniquely can deliver.

INTRO: Last week on our 30th anniversary of national syndication,
we reached a series milestone with Program 1,000: appropriately
titled MILESTONES, Part 1 -- "the evolution of Ambient music from
caves to cathedrals." I'm STEPHEN HILL and this week we conclude
our anniversary programming with MILESTONES, Part 2: "electronic
Ambient in the 20th and 21st centuries."
Once electrical sound transmission, aka the telephone, was invented
by Alexander Graham Bell, and sound recording, aka the phonograph,
was invented by Thomas Edison, it was only a matter of time until
electricity was used to create music. The story is rich in drama
and detail. English music writer MARK PRENDERGAST's "The Ambient
Century" is the best treatment of the subject for interested
listeners.
It's hard to convey just how much optimism and artistic promise
was invested in the idea of using electronics to create new sounds
and new music, especially during the Avante Garde movements of the
early 20th century. LEON THEREMIN, MAURICE MARTENOT, JORG MAGER,
OTTO LEUNING, VLADIMIR USSACHEVSKY, EDGAR VARESE, LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI,
KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN, PIERRE BOULEZ, JOHN CAGE and many others
played important roles in advancing the cause. As Mark Prendergast
puts it: "The importance to twentieth-century music of atmospheric
sound -- its timbre and personality -- is a measure of how much
innovative musical ideas intertwined with technological change."
So the evolution of Ambient music during the last 100 years is a
story of artistic progressives moving beyond the old conventions
of classical music, adopting new music-making technologies and
relentlessly pushing them toward the ideal of unlimited sonic
and musical invention.
In the early decades of the 20th century, when equipment was rare
and expensive, the movement was confined to academic and state-
sponsored arts institutions. The arrival of inexpensive electronic
instruments really hit its stride in 1964 with the Moog Modular
Synthesizer, and the home recording revolution in the 1970s which
followed opened up electronic music to everyone. Today the
revolution has moved to the computer and music software, while
the distribution of electronic music has moved online and to
massive festivals, making it a truly international phenomenon.

INTRO: Canadian engineer, producer, guitarist and solo artist
DANIEL LANOIS drifted slowly into worldwide fame during the 1980s
as a result of frequent collaborations with Ambient mastermind
BRIAN ENO, and work with some of the most famous rock artists
of the 20th century.
Born in Quebec in 1951, he grew up on French and Irish folk music
and rock, and played drums and guitar. His varied musical background,
talent for studio work, mastery of electronics and sound processing,
and sensitivity to texture and atmosphere made him indispensable
as an engineer or producer on key albums by U2, PETER GABRIEL,
BOB DYLAN, ROBBIE ROBERTSON, WILLIE NELSON, and others.
In 1989 Lanois began a career as a solo artist that continues
today. He had moved to his spiritual home in New Orleans in 1987
and built a studio, where he perfected his distinctively rootsy,
swampy, atmospheric sound.

INTRO: The perception of time is as elusive as a subatomic particle.
As soon as you concentrate on it, it changes. Something similar
happens in the contemporary music genre called Minimalism. Invented
in the 1960's by composers looking for an escape from the bitter
dissonances and static textures of academic Serialism, artists like
LA MONTE YOUNG, TERRY RILEY, STEVE REICH, PHILIP GLASS and JOHN ADAMS
created a new approach to composition that changes our sense of time.
Simplicity, silence, repetition, slowly changing phrases, continuous
drones, modal tunings and hypnotic patterns created both flowing
textures and a meditative quality that's influenced Classical and
Electronic, Rap and Rock. And the foundations of Minimalism were
absorbed by BRIAN ENO in the 1970s and applied to the new language
of electronics to create Ambient music.
Today the characteristics of minimalism are so embedded in
contemporary music that we hardly notice them. And since the turn
of the century, there's been a move to "humanize" the strict forms
of Minimalism by adding back the melodic and harmonic sensitivity
of Classical music. No one has had more success at this than
Italian composer and pianist LUDOVICO EINAUDI. As I said about him
in 2008: "Like fine Italian food, fashion and design, Einaudi's
music has a humanized opulence and sensual appeal. The elements are
simple and often repetitive, but the effect is subtle, contemplative,
satisfying, even profound."

INTRO: Since the time of CLAUDE DEBUSSY at the turn of the
20th century, composers have sought to go beyond the conventions
of the Western classical tradition. Debussy revolutionized writing
for orchestra with floating harmonies, exotic Eastern melodies
and non-traditional orchestration, and made the leap from
Impressionist painting to Impressionism in music.
We feature one of his signature compositions "Nuages" or "Clouds"
from his "Three Nocturnes." Today it sounds like harmless film
music (or more likely, film music sounds like it) but in 1899
it was revolutionary.
If he were alive today, Debussy would be a happy man: electronic
instruments, studios and computers have opened up new impressions
and vast new worlds of sound, and Ambient composers are creating
never-before-heard images of time and space.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we'll ride those images
to high and nebulous realms, on a program called SOUNDCLOUDS.

INTRO : The guitar has a history measured in centuries, but it
wasn't until about 60 years ago that some clever Americans figured
out how to use it for space exploration. Here at Hearts of Space,
we've been documenting that discovery with a series of programs
called SPACE GUITARS, and this week we have a new installment.
Whether the guitar is acoustic, electric or electronic, it's
really the sensibility of the player that matters when it comes
to creating and exploring space with the guitar. On this program,
we'll hear the whole panorama: from acoustic guitar with electronic
keyboards, to electric guitar, to electronically echoed, expanded,

INTRO: Even in the early days, the pioneers of electronic music
knew they were on to something special. Here was a way of sculpting
sound that made it like clay -- something you could shape to your
own creative vision. Today every artist can have electronic tools
of almost unlimited power at their fingertips. We've had several
generations of musicians tending the electronic vineyards, and
these days the sonic wine is available in many varietals.
For example, "downtempo" is a name invented in the 1990s to
describe slowed-down, less intense electronic dance music. It's
still beat-y but the atmosphere is chilled; rather than pumping
you up, it floats you along with a relaxed vibe that leads to
pure Ambient realms.

INTRO: In his now-famous Ambient Manifesto of 1978, English
composer BRIAN ENO defined a new kind of environmental music.
He also released some very sophisticated examples of his own.
Along with the manifesto came the classic AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR
AIRPORTS. But the follow up release in 1982, AMBIENT 4: ON LAND
was something else entirely: a group of 'psychic landscapes'
that existed between ambient sounds from nature and composed music.
Like experiments by WENDY CARLOS on SONIC SEASONINGS a decade
earlier, it explored a new musical territory at the intersection
of field recordings, electronics and acoustic instruments that's
still influential today.
The word _ecotone_ is a combination of "ecology" and "tone," from
the Greek _tonos_ or tension -- a place where ecologies are in
tension. In the natural sciences, an ecotone is a transition area
between adjacent plant communities, such as forest and grassland.
It can be narrow or wide, local or regional; a gradual blending or
a sharp boundary line.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we explore that boundary
with a group of these psychic landscapes, on a program called
ECOTONES. These soundscapes are more environments in which you
exist than music to which you listen. Unlike most music which
conveys a sense of movement, they're largely static environments
with a feeling of both peace and chaos.

INTRO: The complex harmonics of the drone, the gentle tones of
the _bansuri_ flute: it's one of the signature sounds of the
classical music of India.
The word _bansuri_ comes from the Sanskrit roots for bamboo and
melody: the North Indian instrument is a simple bamboo tube with
six or seven finger holes; the pitch varies with the length.
According to Indian mythology, the bansuri is associated with
Lord Krishna, who is said to have cast a spell on women and
animals with his playing.
These days, the bansuri is casting it's quiet spell around the
world: the extended notes, vocal inflections and rich ornamen-
tations have a soothing effect on even the most hyperactive
among us.

INTRO: The Ambient music genre called "Techno-Tribal" is based on
an oxymoron: the combination of sophisticated electronics with the
earthy, organic sounds of so-called primitive, tribal cultures. On
the surface they have nothing in common...what's going on here?
The trail was blazed by STEVE ROACH in the late 1980s, after a
life-changing trip to the Australian outback, where he encountered
the artifacts and instruments of the aborigines. The resulting
album "Dreamtime Return" is one of the foundation stones of the
genre.
Of course, anthropologists and ethnologists had been collecting
music from native cultures for years; Oriental music had strongly
influenced the evolution of European music in the late 19th and
early 20th century, and Stravinsky had injected a dose of ethnic
vitality into European classical music with "The Rite of Spring."
But by the 1980s, electronic music had grown into several
predictable styles: cool and mechanistic from the high-tech
artists; warm and melodic from the romantics; ethereal,
atmospheric, sometimes dark, dissonant and strange, from the
Ambient composers.
Roach, and those who followed him, forged a new connection between
electronic soundscapes and elemental musics rooted in the earthy
rhythms of drums, rattles and ancient instruments like the
didgeridoo, the sounds of insects, animals, and nature itself.
The combination 'grounded' electronic music in the earth and in
traditional acoustics, with a sound that looked backward and
forward at the same time, and gave electronic music a new kind
of vitality.
Today, techno-tribal is an established style on the world's map
of electronic music, a fusion of ancient and contemporary that
complement each other. On this transmission of Hearts of Space,

a more inappropriate name for a music genre?
Whether you love the name or hate it, you have to ask: what were
they thinking? The category sweeps up all kinds of music and

INTRO: Let's consider, gentle listener, the "chordophone" family
of musical instruments. It's a large, diverse brood including
almost anything with stretched strings: zithers, lyres, harps,
lutes, guitars, the violin family, hundreds of ethnic string
instruments like the Japanese koto and the African kora, and not
least -- keyed zithers like the harpsichord and the piano.
Chordophones can be plucked, strummed, bowed, keyed, or struck.
Looking back in time, zithers, lyres and harps were the founda-
tional instruments of the chordophone family. They were used in
antiquity to accompany recitations and promote healing. On this

San Francisco composer and producer eO, short for ERIC OBERTHALER.

The world ocean is the largest part of the hydrosphere -- the
system of water, atmosphere and time that gives rise to the water
cycle, weather and climate. Over 70% of earth is covered by the
oceans, with an average depth of over 12,000 feet. That...is a lot
of water. So though we're not an all-ocean planet, we're definitely
a water planet.

INTRO: There's hardly anything more controversial than Islam these
days, but there's one branch of Muslim culture that by philosophy
and practice is peaceful and apolitical. Even so, it has been
subject to persecution by other sects.
The mystical, inward-facing order of _Sufism_ goes back to the
very beginning of the Islamic religion in the 8th century. It has
parallels to the venerable traditions of Buddhist and Hindu
mysticism, and aims for direct union with God by purifying the
heart.
The work of the Persian Sufi poet RUMI has achieved worldwide
popularity for its beauty and insight, and a body of Sufi music
evolved to accompany religious practices and meditation (the most
famous being the whirling dervishes of the _Mevlevi_ order in
Turkey), creating a genre that's not only alive today, but
producing new strains of contemplative music.

INTRO: From the prehistoric days of musical instruments, we have
the flute, the rattle, and the drum - later, primitive trumpets
and reeds, and from ancient Mesopotamia more than 4,000 years ago,
early members of the _chordophone_ family of plucked strings: lyres,
zithers, harps, and lutes.
Stringed instruments have come a long way since then. In Europe,
bowed strings were refined into the violin family we know today,
while lutes evolved into the guitar. Music for strings developed
along with the instruments, and Western classical music is rich
with variations.
Among stringed instruments, perhaps the most versatile is the
cello: a virtual solo string orchestra. On this transmission of

INTRO: The Native American flute is one of the world's simplest,
but most moving instruments. In the last 30 years, it's sparked
an entire sub-genre of contemplative music.
Variations include the Anasazi plains flute of the Southwest,
with its two-chamber design; the woodlands flute, a simple
whistle; and the Aztec drone flute, used for accompaniment.
Native flutes are end-blown, and generally made from softwoods
like cedar and juniper, for their fragrance and soft tone. But
also from hardwoods, bamboo, cane, plastic or bone. Typically
tuned to a minor pentatonic scale, their plaintive sound seems
to resonate with the wistful emotions of the fall season and
the endless spaces of the American Southwest.

INTRO: The first movement of BEETHOVEN's famous Piano Sonata
No.14 in C Sharp Minor, better known as the "Moonlight Sonata."
The nickname came from a German music critic in 1832 who
impressionistically compared the effect to "moonlight shining
on Lake Lucerne."
Beethoven intended it as a prelude, but in the score he instructed
the performer to keep the sustain pedal down for the entire movement,
a kind of special effect that mixed the music with natural harmonic
reverberation from the piano. With its hypnotic triplets and ghostly
melody, for Ambient music fans, it's one of the simplest, yet most
memorable pieces ever written.
Beethoven may have inadvertently started a movement to redefine
the piano as an instrument for contemplative, spatially expanded
music, seeding the Impressionism of DEBUSSY, the early ambient
music of SATIE, and laying the foundations of modern Minimalism.

INTRO: The eternally innocent sound of the boy soprano: whether
you're Christian or not, it's a sound that floats high and pure,
far above our worldly cares.
The boy soprano or "treble" voice has been used in Christian
religious music for centuries, especially in England. True fact:
Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones sang for Queen Elizabeth II
in Westminster Abbey as a boy soprano!
Since Medieval times, some of the Western world's greatest composers
have written music for sacred services. The immersive ambience of
great stone churches and cathedrals, the majestic tones of the
pipe organ, and the massed voices of the choir and the worship
community created the context; from it came a genre of sacred
space music, including vocal and instrumental pieces, great
liturgical works, and hymns and psalms of sublime beauty. It's a
