PGM 717 : "HARMONIC VOICES 2"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : the subtle world of harmonic overtone singing
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-07-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: It's a bit of a stretch thinking of your head as a
musical instrument, but for practitioners of the art of
overtone singing, it's all about head cavities and how they
resonate. At least that's the science part of it. The emotional
and cultural part is a lot more interesting.
Mongolian herdsmen and Tibetan monks developed the
technique for solitary entertainment and meditation centuries
ago. The famous 'throat singers' of Tuva have their own style;
and with a little practice, almost anyone can sing two or
you to sing harmony...with yourself.
It's living research into a hidden musical dimension, with
sounds that range from beautiful to ethereal to absolutely
spine-tingling. Beginning with the pioneering work of DAVID
HYKES and THE HARMONIC CHOIR in the 1970s, overtone
singing and overtone music has cast its spell on a dedicated
group of western musicians, mostly in the U.S. and Germany.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The countries that ring the Arctic Circle at the northern
edge of Europe may be small, but their music has had a big impact.
From classical composers like GRIEG, SIBELIUS and CARL NIELSEN,
jazz giants like JAN GARBAREK and PALLE MIKKELBORG, to pop stars
that has brought it fans around the world.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a program of refined
20th-century orchestral music from the far north. We've been
inspired by the research and writing of a real musicologist,
DR. FREDERICK KEY SMITH, a Hearts of Space listener from
Northern Florida, and author of the book "Nordic Art Music:
From the Middle Ages to the 3rd Millennium."

INTRO: SUBLIMATION -- an unusual word with two meanings:
in chemistry, it means to change directly from a solid to a gas
without becoming liquid -- as in ice becoming water vapor; in
psychology, it means to change the instinctive expression of an
impulse to one that's socially acceptable.
Winter...challenges us in both ways. Burdened with refrigerated
moisture, the air lays heavy, muted and solemn -- a study in tones
of gray with glints of silver; while the psyche, starved for light,
restrained by cold, must find expression in other ways.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, spacemusic for a
'heart of winter' journey called SUBLIMATION.

PGM NOTE : neo-Tibetan songs and soundscapes
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-04-05
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The story of Tibet in the last 60 years is almost stranger
than fiction. This tiny country high atop the Himalayan mountains,
home to an ancient and vibrant Buddhist culture, was one of the
most remote places in the world -- the object of legendary
pilgrimages by climbers and truthseekers.
Despite being of no strategic political value, it was brutally
occupied in 1949 by its Chinese neighbors, who continue to dominate
it today despite protests from all over the world. In the face
of this, many Tibetans have emigrated to Northern India and
dispersed across the western world, bringing with them their
unique culture.
Tibetan music ranges from ceremonial and religious to secular,
with its own distinctive folk song traditions. In the wake of the
Tibetan diaspora, a number of artists are bringing the sounds and
music of Tibet to the west, finding collaborators, and creating
new fusions of Tibetan and western music.

PGM NOTE : floating in the space between winter and spring
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 11-Feb-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The long and inexorable road to spring sometimes requires an extra measure of patience. In California, the first blossoms appear early, bringing a precarious sense of hope, long before the winter storms have passed. Confined indoors, movement constrained, it's a good time for ambient music, with its sustained mood of intimacy, warmth, and gentle ecstasy.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : floating and flying on electronic waves
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 25-Feb-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Amazing, but true: we've been inventing electronic instruments and
creating electronic music for over 120 years. Back in 1876, ELISHA GRAY
invented the electroharmonic piano; the instrument transmitted musical tones
over wires. In 1906, THADDEUS CAHILL invented the Dynamophone, also known as
the Telharmonium. It was the first 'additive' synthesizer, producing music by
use of alternating current generators or 'dynamos.' Inconveniently, it weighed
unfortunately, they melted.
We've been doing better lately. Today, electronic instruments are ubiquitous
and portable, fueling a worldwide boom in electronic music. And it reaches us
on the air, on nice plastic discs, and on wires....that don't melt.

HEARTS of SPACE PGM 0723 : "AFFINITY"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : the natural harmony of piano and cello
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 4-Mar-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Some combinations exhibit a natural harmony. They go together, as they
say, like bread and butter, milk and cookies, and the ever popular peaches and
venerable rattle and drum, the harp and flute, guitar and bass, and our
subject today: piano and cello.
The rhythmic clarity and endless harmonic potential of the piano, combined
with the soulful, singing lines of the cello, has inspired some of our
greatest composers. And because cellists often play piano as well, today some
of them are playing both instruments on their recordings. On this transmission
of HEARTS of SPACE, we summon the muse of complementarity, on a program called
AFFINITY.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : sacred choral music for Easter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 25-Mar-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : This week Christians around the world celebrate Holy Week, culminating
on Easter Sunday. Easter brings together two traditions: the ancient pagan
vernal festival, and the Christian festival celebrating the resurrection of
Jesus.
It's a tradition with a very long history. The word Easter is thought to have
come from the Saxon goddess of spring, Eastre. Sometime after the 2nd century,
the Christian holy day was integrated with the ancient pagan festivals of
spring, with their message of rebirth and celebration. Combining sacred texts
with music, the story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the
Crucifixion, and the Resurrection gave Christian sacred music a more solemn
and exalted tone.
"Across the centuries," says JOHN KEHOE, "men and women have shared a profound
need to express those truths and feelings that words alone rarely convey. By
some alchemy, sublime words may be transmuted by music into a distant echo of
a Paradise lost, and voices exhale the breath of life."

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a HAROLD BUDD ambient retrospective
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 8-Apr-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Who would have believed, when it was written in 1972, that this
delicate chamber music was actually an act of defiance. "When I told people"
says HAROLD BUDD. "that my idea was to make music that was as devastingly
pretty as possible, it was out?and-out politics." In fact, the
California-born composer and ambient music pioneer has always been something
of a contrarian. He got a late start in music, getting his degree in
composition at the age of 36 at USC in Los Angeles. In the late 1960s he was
loosely involved with a circle of Southern California minimalist and avant
garde composers, absorbing influences from JOHN CAGE and MORTON FELDMAN, but
also from jazz giants like PHAROAH SANDERS and JOHN COLTANE. He even wrote a
piece for piano, harp, celeste, and topless female choir. Ah, yes. Those were
the days? In 1970 he began teaching at the California Institute of the Arts.
He left 6 years later after meeting someone who would change his life: English
producer, musician and theorist BRIAN ENO. Years later Budd told me with his
typical sly wit: "The problem with teaching was that you had to listen to so
much bad music." Eno signed BUDD to his new OBSCURE RECORDS label in 1976.
Budd and Eno went on to create several influential and widely enjoyed albums
-- foundation stones of the ambient genre, including THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR
and THE PEARL. Budd's early works had neo-classical titles, like Madrigals
of the Rose Angel and The Pavilion of Dreams. In addition to his musical
gifts, he had an ear for language and the sensibility of a poet, able to work
with ambiguous images and squeeze emotion out of them. He didn't just do
pretty, either. As you'll hear, he explored darker, stranger landscapes:
melancholy, forlorn, and highly evocative. 87=7

PGM NOTE : an inner-toxicating journey in the Sufi soundscape
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 13-May-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Sufism is a tradition of Islamic mysticism with a long and fascinating
musical history. Devotional at its core, like western evangelical religions it
aims to transport the seeker to states of spiritual intoxication and union
with God. Over the centuries, it has taken many forms, from solitary
meditations to elaborate ritual ceremonies, most famously the Mevlevi Sufi
the famous "whirling dervishes."
It starts, as many of these things did, with the Persians. From medieval
Persia, Sufi music and dance spread throughout the world of Islam, in the
trance music of North and East Africa, across the Balkans, throughout Central
the way to Indonesia. And today, it has a natural affinity for the trance
dancers of the global groove community.

INTRO : Anthropologists tell us that our "Paleo-Indian" ancestors have lived
on this continent for up to 40,000 years. In the history of Native American
musical instruments, first comes the drum, then the rattle, then bone
whistles, and then flutes of bamboo, river reeds, cedar and other woods. Until
the electric guitar, they're the only instruments indigenous to this country.
The native flute played different roles in different Indian cultures, from
courtship to prayer ceremonies. Around a thousand years ago, the Anasazi
revived in the 1970's. Today, they're still played in traditional ways by
Native American musicians, and used for creative explorations by a new breed
of ambient musicians.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 27-May-2005

INTRO : It's always cause for celebration when a new recording arrives from
American composer and trumpeter JON HASSELL. For the last 20 years, he's been
a source of insights that have inspired the artistic direction of this program
Hassell emerged from the electronic avant-garde of the 1960s, then changed
direction and headed to India as a student of Kirana vocal master PANDIT PRAN
NATH. He opened his ears to the panorama of sounds around him and envisioned a
expanded musical vocabulary that embraced elements from non-western cultures.
Above all, it left behind the ascetic sound which European music associated
with serious expression. Hassell called it "Fourth World Music."
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another journey in the 4th world
soundscape called MAGIC REALISM. The phrase is associated with the fiction of
GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ, and other writers, where magical elements appear
within a realistic setting. For Hassell, it's a rich hybrid of sounds ancient
and digital, composed and improvised, Eastern and Western.

INTRO : New York Times columnist TOM FRIEDMAN says the world is flat...because
India's electronics and software companies can now compete with American and
European firms. But electronic musicians discovered Indian music 40 years ago,
and a new generation of Indian musicians have now discovered electronics. The
point is to innovate, inspire, and immerse, with a potent fusion of
traditional Indian sounds pumped up with the rhythms of electronic trance,
expanded with the spaciousness of ambient, and extended to the scale of a
worldwide audience.

INTRO : When COLUMBUS sailed to the new world for the king and queen of Spain
in 1492, he couldn't have known that he would begin the most successful
transfer of culture in history. Today, Spanish is the 3rd most spoken language
in the world, the guitar is one of the most popular instruments, and the Latin
sensibility in music has brought us great popular dances, the fiery compas of
Flamenco, the airy charm of Andean mountain music, the restrained passion of
Tango, and the relaxed sensuality of the Brazilian ballad.

INTRO : Summer...gets our motors running, as Americans hit the road in our
annual quest to relax, expand, squander fossil fuel and warm the atmosphere.
It's a time for stretching boundaries, expanding the envelope, exploring. Yet
below the dynamic surface of the season, a slower, more subtle experience
awaits, if we can just slow down enough to find it.

INTRO : At the apogee of summer, with temperatures hitting three digits, one
naturally thinks of the desert. And with global warming, we may have a lot
more of it before long. For ambient musicians, though, the desert has long
inspires personal insight and creative expression. In the words of Western
essayist and environmental writer EDWARD ABBEY, with it's "panorama of light,
space, rock and silence," the desert is "a window onto eternity."

INTRO : When we hear about Africa these days, often it's news about something
terrible. But if the sound of African music is any guide, there's an abundance
of joy, beauty and wisdom in Africa as well. Credit the French for being early
adopters of African music; though in the last 20 years, artists from West
Africa (especially Mali and Senegal) have charmed audiences everywhere. On
this transmission of Hearts of Space, we revisit the softer side of the
African soundscape on a program called AFRICA WEST 2.

INTRO : How to make sense of the now endless permutations of electronic sound?
is the question. Styles and categories have multiplied, verging on
'distinctions without a difference.' A more intuitive set of descriptions
might serve us better: warm to cold; dark to light; active to relaxed; dense
to spacious. Hopefully, it won't be any more complicated than trying to
describe a good cabernet.
In the so-called "Celestial Jukebox" of the near future, perhaps you'll be
able to order music from a menu of qualities: "Computer: play me something
medium active, spatially expanded, with amber harmonies and timbres of
mahogany and silver."
Today, electronic musicians have the creative fun of choosing these qualities
in the studio, as part of the craft of 'sound design'; we still get to have
the fun of bringing their work together for you on these programs; and with
some easy software, you can now do it yourself, if you like.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a warm, spatially open, mildly
mysterious ambient collection for high summer called SUMMERTRONICA 2.

of beauty, called shibui. Shibui means an understated kind of beauty, a
quality that speaks quietly, for itself. Shibui objects have a refined,
unobtrusive sophistication. They embody utility, maturity, complexity, history
rooted in the quiet appreciation of nature.
Today, both Japanese and western musicians attracted by this aesthetic are
creating fusions of traditional Japanese and contemporary ambient music.

INTRO : It was funk music genius and former hair stylist GEORGE CLINTON who
observed years ago that, in one respect, music was just like hair; when one
style was getting hot, another one was getting cold. So if you wanted to be
successful, you had to be able to adapt to the new styles.
Something like that happened to classical music in the late 1960's. Electronic
musicians did restyled versions of great classical pieces to showcase their
new sound on familiar material. The original and by far the most famous of
these projects was WENDY CARLOS' "Switched-On Bach" which sold over 3 million
albums and introduced several generations of listeners to the sound of
synthesizers.
The idea continues today. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a program
of electronic transcriptions of classical masterworks called REMASTERPIECE.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : soft sounds and serene spaces of the native flute
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 7-Oct-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The lonely, introspective sound of the cedar flute. For thousands of
years, it's echoed across the Native American soundscape of the Southwest.
These days you're as likely to hear the sound of slot machines as the native
preserving traditional ways in the modern world.
Today, the native flute's been adopted by non-native musicians drawn to its
essential simplicity and soulful tonality. It's a sound we like to return to
every autumn. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a program called CEDAR
SOUL.

INTRO : In the multi-hued autumn twilight, the rich, coppery tones of the
cello resonate naturally with the changing tones of the landscape. Perhaps no
western instrument has the musical and emotional range and depth; from its
foundational role in the orchestra and the string quartet, to its uncanny
vocal emulations and contemplative solo flights-- the cello seems to know no
boundaries.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a cello-centric journey with piano,
strings, and a touch of electric guitar, on a program called NOVEMBER TONES.

PGM NOTE : a journey in contemplative sound and light
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 9-Dec-2005
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : PHOS HILARON is the name of an ancient Greek hymn sung at the lighting
in a daily ritual. Here in the northern hemisphere, the light of the sun is at
its lowest at the winter solstice, so we illuminate the season with every kind
of light. We gather in reverberant spaces and sing together. The sound of
massed voices is an image of harmony and unity; echoing on itself, it builds
an image of infinity.
The history of devotional chant extends thousands of years before the
Christian era. In the monasteries of medieval Europe, chant became a form of
worship, a foundation of the daily ritual. Even in our chaotic, mostly secular
the power to move us deeply.

INTRO : If music can be called sacred, then it must exalt the spirit, heal the
this while immersed in the heartache, joy and imperfection of the human
panorama.
Each year during the holiday season, something deep in the human spirit
reaches out through all the chaos and compromise of our world, in search of
images of a more perfect place. In the words of E.C. LE GUIN, "Since time out
of mind, singing has been principal to the observation of this sacred and
crucial time; it celebrates, exhorts, reflects; in it we can find an outlet or
a retreat."
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey in the eternal spaces of
sacred music called VOX SUBLIMAE--sublime voices.
