Blue Day is Robert Scott Thompson's most important CD. It is definitely one of his best efforts, easily one of his most accessible, and it has absolute musical integrity. It also rates as an ambient essential. On this CD, Thompson integrates the best elements from the many genres in which he proliferates. His avant-garde computer music is abundantly present without the dissonant overtones. The ambient minimalism is expansive and deep but not dark. The ethnic trimmings are complementary to the musical integrity and flow of the disc. The visionary aspects of Thompson's work are also abundant. He incorporates some very subtle yet important traces of desert ambience into the proceedings. That is new for him, and he wears it well. By tipping his hat to that style, he acknowledges its importance and accepts its staying power. Building on his reputation as a visionary and creator of hybrids, Thompson forges ahead by incorporating modern and diverse styles into his own unique standards. Great thinkers are always willing to learn. Great innovators are willing to be taught.
