Reflections - Capitol SW11805 (1978)
Gene's 6th Capitol album Reflections reached 23 on the charts and
charted 3 hit singles: One Sided Conversation #8, Farewell Party #5,
and Pick the Wildwood Flower #5. Farewell Party would become his
signature song and he later named his band: The Farewell Party Band.
This is a mostly vinyl rip. I ripped the tracks using an Audio-Technica
turntable and Adobe Audition software. After ripping I cleaned up the
recordings using Adobe Audition. I captured a noise profile from the
inter-track suface noise of the LP and used it to apply about 40 dB of
noise reduction (medium level NR). I then put approximately a .45 sec
logarithmic fadeup start for all tracks so each track begins with
silence. I also tried to fade out all of the tracks to silence, keeping
all discernable signal as long as the surface noise wasn't markedly
higher than the song. After that I used Audition's Single Pop/Click
filter to remove as many of the audible ticks and pops that I could
identify. This is a fairly benign filter and does a very good job of
removing impulse noise without affecting the overall sound. It's also
very time-consuming if the vinyl is very noisy. I think that the
majority of the audible ticks and pops have been removed but I wouldn't
be shocked if you find a few that I missed. Don't tell me about them; I'm
happy with the way it turned out. The three hits were available on CD so
those tracks are not vinyl rips but were replaced by CD rips that were
volume balanced to the Vinyl level.
I scanned the LP covers and used Photoshop to resize them to the correct
size for CD jewel cases. I made my own back cover because the LP cover
Was probably a text book example of a bad cover - song titles in poorly
contrasting colors, hard to read small type, etc. I used the colors of
the original cover's song titles but put them on a better background and
used it to create a jewel box label too. I also created CD disc labels.
Most people won't burn these tracks to a CD but if they should choose to
they can use the provided labels.
